The Trump in Whist.
The whist cranks of the Modern
Athens (and their number is legion)
are continually racking their brains to
devise ways and means for improving
on the game.\ The latest amendment
to the rules is for making the trump
without turning a card. On the first
deal the trump is invariably hearts,
on the second diamonds, on the third
spades, on the fourth clubs. The routine is :epeated in the same order on

J.8.Goodwin Presents Cave No.
1 With One.
J.S. Goodwin of You Bet has donated his year-old cinnamon bear to
Cave No. 1, Curly Bear Degree of this
city. The animal weighs about 250
pounds and has an interesting history.
Last Summer, when it was no larger
than a poodle dog, Martin Lawrence,
the renowned bear hunter, captured it
single-handed in the forest’ wilds near
Graniteville. He kept ita few days
until its teething period began, and
then presented it to Mr. Goodwin.
Since it came into the latter’s possession it has lived on the fat. of the
land and grown to gigantic proportions, being an exceptionally large
specimen of the species. It has an
amiable disposition and a retentive
memory, and Mr. Goodwin has taught
it many smart tricks.
It will make its debut in public life
on the oceasion of the Curly Bear party
in Armory Hall on Friday evening
next, and will be an active participant in the festivities of that oceasion,It is also to be made a part of the regular paraphernalia of Cave No. 1 and
the stuffed grizzly heretofore utilized
asa makeshift in conferring the Degree will be dispensed with.
