SENATORIAL Quzstion: aur Democratic friends are considerably} _ “muddled” over the Senatorial question, The Democratic members having [email protected]. reference to the Senatorial question, makes the contest a kind of a “sweepstake race,” in which all Democrats who can command a vote _ willenter. .Those who. have. no hope of winning think that if defeated they will stand in a good position to win the Custom House or some other good Fedétal position. Hoge, Casserly, Tilford and a score of others have friends among the delégates and they enter for blood, Gwin, while attending to his “private business,” which strangely enough demanded his departure for California. as soon a8 the first announcement of Democratic. victory. was received in New York, looks on with interest, and advises his friends to elect a war Democrat, as peace men are in bad odor in Con——— greasy and would not be admitted unjess they can show a clear record. — Hoge and Casserly represent the war element of Democracy, and unless principles are surrendered for policy neither of them stand any more show of going to the Senate than they do of being wafted to the moon on a zephyr. Hoge wasa Wilmot Proviso man, voted for it in Congress, which is enough to damn any man in the eyes of Democracy.” Casserly was a strong war advocate and stated in a speech that when he thought of the blood shed in defense of the Union, he felt sorry that he had Spilled some in the same cause,. Old Bigler aspires, bat cringing’ letter to Conness when he was after the As-. sessorship, “‘let’s tim out.” Tilford seems to have many warm friends and few enemies in either wing of the party, and from the looks of the thing to an outsider, we had rather buy “pools” on Tilford than any yet mentioned. It is evident that the secession wing of Democracy will make a strong fight against any man who steadily advocated the war until its close, and it is also equally certain that the few war Democrats who have been elected will unite on. some war Democrat, and it ‘will therefore be difficult to elect one of perreee extremes. The contest will undoubtedly be in the Democratic caucus, .and Union men will have no say in the matter. The Union men will no doubt “eentre upon some Union man and give him a complimentary vote, leaving the Democrats to fight their own battle. ‘Woutp nor Apmir Him.—The Democrats of Ohio talk of electing Vallandigham theirSenator. If elected we do not believe the Senate would admit him. He was convicted of encouraging men to resist the draft and aiding the . rebellion, and we do not Know that he has done anything since his banishment from the country to make him ‘. worthy of a seat in the Senate. As the Senate is the judge of the qualifications _of its own members, Vallandigham “would not be likely. to obtain a seat even if Democrats of Ohio should consider him worthy. For his treason-he was condemned to imprisonment during the war. President Lincoln, who was’ ‘always on the side of mercy, sent him through the Union lines into the Confederacy, but he ran the blockade and made his way to Canada. PROSECUTION FOR BARRATRY.—Two persons in Pennsylvania were recently indicted for barratry, an offense defined tobe “the habitual moving, exciting; and maintaining suits and quarrels} either at law or otherwise,” and punishable by fine and imprisonment.
