ATTEMPTED RoBBERY.—While two gentlemen, from Grass Valley, were on their
way to Rough & Réady, Wednesday evening, and when near Randolph Flat, two
men stepped out into the road forthe pur-,
pose of committing a robbery. Fortunately one of the gentlemen in the buggy had
a pistol in his hand cocked, which the robbers did’nt seem to like the looks of. The
' foot-pads merely said “go on”—and our
friends went on without further molestation. It seems these “knights of the road”
remained in that vicinity. all night, as
when the ball, given by! Walling, broke
up at 5 o'clock yesterday morning, the
foot-pidtds-were seen. to come out of their
hiding place to’the \road. The ought-tobe-killed-thieves, finding so. many teams
together, concluded it would not. be safe
to undertaké their favorite game. It appears that Carley and Zekind, of this city,
did not start from Rough & Ready as soon
as the rest of the crowd, and for fear. the
robbers: would relieve them of their coin,
the teams came toa halt until our good,
looking friends came up, greatly to the
disgust of the robbers and relief of the
aforesaid gents>
BravTiruL.—R. A. Diver the popular
agent of the Florence Sewing Macing,.has
just received seyeral most elegant machines, and they canbe seen at the store
_ ‘of A. Goldsmith, under the TRANseRIPy’
office. The Florence is by all odds the
very best sewing machine ever offered to .
the public. The Florence Company, asa
rule, always receives a first premium at
all of the State fairs. If you want a sewing machine—one that will give you perfect satisfaction, go to R. A. Diverand buy
a Florence.
Very Ricu.—We Iearn that the New
York Co's. mine, better known as the
Union, atUnionville, a short distance .
from ‘this city, is yielding very rich rock, .
better than any ever before taken out of
READINGS.-We hope Miss Pittsinger,
the celebrated poetess, will be greeted
with a good audience at the Brick Church,
_ on Saturday evening next. She comes
among us highly recommended as an excellent reader and poetess, and every way
worthy the patronage of our people.
Rich Smver Specimens.—We were
shown yesterday,at the National Exchan ge
Hotel, two beautiful specimens of silver
bearing rock, which were brought to this
city by C.B, Hawley. The best looking
piece was taken from the Chicago ledge,
South Fork District.in-Shasta county.—
The rock assays $600 to the ton, and the
___ ledge is between five and six feet thick.
. The other specimen was from the Crystal
ledge.and assays $300 to the ton. We
learn that nearly all of the ledges in that
District are paying handsomely.
_. HovusEs.-A great many new
welling houses are being erected on the
outskirts of the town, and we understand
that some six or seven more will be put up
immediately. rea
MorE GoL_p.—An extensive formation
of conglomerate or “pudding-stoné,” exists
at a point on the railroad above Alta, and
& number of claims have been located on
either side of the road. Gold is found in
the formation, enough, it is’ thought, to
pay for crushing. I has been pretty thoroughly prospected. . So says the Stars &
Strips, 3
