When the tail was last measured at
the Dudley Observatory, a few days
ago, it was eighteen degrees, long.
This_corresponds with an actual
length of about 69,000,000 miles. Telescopic study of this great object'reveals an increased elongation of the
comet’s head. . The bright round nue
cleus in the end nearest the sun has
preserved its tiret apparent relation
to the less dense material direct:y
surrounding it ever since the separation of the compact and oblong head,
which eccurred several’ weeks ago.
But the head has been continualiy
increasing in length, thongh diminishing iv. brightness, and when last
measured by Mr. Tucker was over
100,000. miles long. It is supposed
that the comet: willremain’ within
reach of the telescopes of astronomers until some time in January.
When nearest the sun, the comet
passed within 750,000 miles of the .
center of that orb and only about
300,000 miles from its apparent surface.
