The November meteors are beginning to shoot across ‘the firmament, The great electrical disturbance now existing ought to warrant a grand display. Since 1867 there has not been a great shower. Something magnificent is expected in a few days. If the astronomers have ‘not miecalculated, the comet will return on the back track in afew months and appear ten times as large as it did a month ago. It is estimated that the reastern-~heavens. will be a sheet of flame from midnight — until sunrise, pesented to the world such as bas never before been witnessed by mortals, After this exhibition the comet will plunge into the sun, the final tomb of all comets. The comet is still plainly to be seen, particularly by those wha remain in the dark a few minutes before directing their eyes toward it, When the tail was last measured at the Dudley Observatory, a few days ago, it was eighteen degrees, long. This_corresponds with an actual length of about 69,000,000 miles. Telescopic study of this great object'reveals an increased elongation of the comet’s head. . The bright round nue cleus in the end nearest the sun has preserved its tiret apparent relation to the less dense material direct:y surrounding it ever since the separation of the compact and oblong head, which eccurred several’ weeks ago. But the head has been continualiy increasing in length, thongh diminishing iv. brightness, and when last measured by Mr. Tucker was over 100,000. miles long. It is supposed that the comet: willremain’ within reach of the telescopes of astronomers until some time in January. When nearest the sun, the comet passed within 750,000 miles of the . center of that orb and only about 300,000 miles from its apparent surface. ees ctl itm meme The Coin Not Forthcoming. Although M. They approach saloon keepers and others in a mys terious manner, confideutially tell}, how they have brought here a few thousand smuggled cigars from Havana, and that being hard up they will sell the goods at a sacrifice. Notwithstanding the antiquity of the dodge which has been practiced at intervals throughout the length and . breadth of the land since time inimeworial, several victims have been found who bought in lots ranging from 500 to. 4,000. The price realized is $30°per thousand, the buyers thinking they are getting the advantage of the Government by a very large percent. The fact is that there is nothing Wrong about the cigars. excepting that they are the woist kind of ‘‘stinkers,” and were manufactured by Chinamen at a San Francisco factory, where the market price is $18 a thousand. They are properly stamped, On the caution notice is printed in large letters ‘‘Key West,” and under this in very small letters are the number of the factory and the nomber of the Revenue District (1) in which it is situated, The Spaniards bave their regular and special licenses—indeed, as Deputy Internal Revenue Collector Rolfe told the TrRaRscrirt reporter yester day after a careful investigation ot ithe affair, ‘‘Everything is as straight as a.string so far as Uncle Sam’s interests are concerned.
