4 & 4 ¥ SP ALA WA RS. SB BG AS Tt ET AERC TERE EGG , N. J., and had mels. There is a considerable expense ‘of time and labor however, in this process, which gives no-retarn,as the whole mass, including the cobble stones and gravel found in the cement is run through a mill. A new cement mill has been invented, for which the power of separating the gravel from the pulp is claimed. It is invented. by Captain Cox, and one of them is soon to be put in operation on a claim neat Grass Val. ley. One of these milis, says the National, has been in operation since the 5th of September, at Jeffersonville, near Jamestown, Tudlumne county, and the gentleman on whose claims it is located and in operation, informs us that it: works very satisfactorily, and is deci_____ edly a cheap process of working cement . gravel claims. He states that 35 tons of ordinary cement gravel can be put through the mill in twelve hours, and $80 tons in 24 hours if the gravel is not very hard. In crashing this amount, he has it so arranged that one man at~ *ends to the whole machinery, which is tun by water power, without much ‘trouble,. and the same water used for driving this machinery carries off the stones discharged by the mill. In re gard to saving the gold, he says it depends somewhat on the quality. If the gold is not very fine or rusty, there is not much trouble in saving the great‘er portion of it, but he is of the opinion, aa _ with the experience he has had in ope‘rating ¢he mill, that even if fine and rusty he has saved the most of it. All _ ‘the gold is saved after it leaves the mill, and as to the mode of saving it ev‘ery one can have his own idea and con— struct his apparatus accordingly. In the mill we are speaking of, quicksilveris put into the mill, a little at a time, which of course mixes in with the dirt. All the fine dirt, gold, water and quicksilver go through the holes in the bottom, falling on an apron below with low riffles, and from that on a large shaking table which has over 350 motions per minate, and from there it is led into long sluices. The driving power of the mill is furnished by a cheap hurdy-gurdy wheel, 12 feet in diameter, made of two-inch plank, with 40 inches of water and 140 feet fall.— Another company working in the vicinity of the one we have been speaking Of is about putting one of the mills on their claims, being perfectly satisfied as to its working successfully and economi.cally. An improvement has been made in the mill since the above was in opetation, by which we are told 100 tons of cement can be put through in 24 hours, and one of these improved mills is about being put in operation on the _ Hope Gravel Mining Company’s claims on Alta Hill. Mr. Locke, the superin.tendent of the company, informs us that the mill is already on the ground, and when in operation will be’ driven by a steam engine of 16 horse power, and he expects to have it in operation in two or three. weeks, when we shall be able to give those interested « better idea of its advantages. We have devoted a large space to the notice of this vement mill, because we believe, if it affects all that is claimed for it, it will add greatly to the effectual and economical working of the extensive cement gravel deposits in various parts of our county. koe i SEVERE Storm at Sirka.—-We have received a letter from our Sitka correspondent which will appear to-morrow. Ina postscript he states that a most fearfal storm visited Sitka harbor on the nightof the 27th of October. Ships were torn from their moorings and several of them were driven ashore. The John L. Stephens lost her boats and ‘paddle boxes and prepared to put to _. landed, and as they were in an open warehouse they sustained much dam_. Worxrse _Cement.—It has only, included numbers of wealthy and repu‘been a few years since mills were used . ted respectable citizens. _ an working cement, but the process has been found 80 effective that stamps are Tich deposits foundin the old river chanThey are believed to have realized millions of dollars by the nefarious business. General Averill, of not remarkable cavalry service during .the war in the Shenandoah Valley, is spoken of for Secretary of War. There is a rumor that the treaty for the purchase of the Danish West India Islands has been signed at Copenhagen. Three condemned Fenians were all executed at-Manchesteér, on the 23d, in thé presence of a great crowd, and the precautions taken against an outbreak were effectual. THE wives of Mendez and Mejia are mad; Miramon‘s wife is stricken beyond hope of recovery ; Princess SalmSalm is in jail; Carlotta will surely die when she knows about the fate of her husband ; and thus ends the women of the Mexican muddle. THE hot corn business must be a profitable one, for in New York and Brooklyn, during the past season, 1,700. persons have been engaged in selling it about the streets, whilst in Phila-. delphia from 500 to 600 persons were engaged in the same trade. Amone the difficulties which the English army will be compelled to endure in the Abyssinian expedition, are said to be the bilharzia haematopia, the trichocephalus dispar, and the filaria medinensis. OF the twelve gentlemen who acted asa reception committee on the occasion twenty-five years ago, only one—P. M. Wetmore—is alive. Washington Ir. ving was chairman of the committee. A shrewd villain in Nashua, N. H., recently went deliberately up to a store window and broke in a pane of French glass, and when asked to pay for it, as deliberately drew out a $100 bill, which the storekeeper took, giving him $70 in change. The bill proved to be counterfeit. THE Sacramento Water Works engine isrun on coal from the Eureka tine, Contra Costa. THE total property of Napa county is valued at $3,326,272, upon which the taxes of 1867 amounted to $113,622 86. THE Chinese Government has sent to Washington for specimen samples of our fractional currency. THE Postmaster General will soon recommend that all: mail drivers and letter carriers be requlred to wear a par ticular uniform. THE father of Goldwin Smith, the eminent English political economist, has committed suicide in a fit of temporary insanity. THERE is a flouring mill away off in Ruby Valley. Five thousand bushels of wheat were harvested this year in that valley. Mendocino tragedy, who was reported dead, is recovering. Two-thousand tons of tea were brought by the Great Republic. THE Chinese of San Francisco have contracted for a theatre to cost $40,000. OnE of Queen Victoria’s younger sous, Prince Arthur, recently had the small pox. THE statement of the Commissiofiers of Emigration show that during the year ending October 30th, 1867, 208,427 emigrants arrived at New York. GEN.
