FRIDAY, OCT. 10, 1884. RRR ST THE SAME OLD THING. Some laborious scribe has found an address of Carrothers, the opponent of Barclay Henley for Congress, in whioh in the early years of the war he differed radically with Linco!n’s administration on the slavery emancipation matter. Very likely. Agood many good men have beeome Republicans since that day who were ardent copperheads then, A good many men who fought in the rebel army are supporting Blaine and Logan. It is only fools who never change. The war is happily over; slavery is abolished; new issues“ are to the front. Some men became Republicans in 1856, some in 1861, some in 1864, some in 1880, all epochs in Republican history, and vast numbers now for the first time in 1884. The main thing is are they now Republicans; they are not unforgiveab'e because they once held Democratic jdeas. ‘‘Whilethe lamp,” etc, It is the unrepentant, like Henley, who are unchasgeable in their enmity to all the good acco:nplished in the last twenty-four years, who are reprobate. . SPELL IT SL POZE ET Ex-Jupce Davio Davis, of IIlinois, like Grant, anys he is out of politics, “but I am with you in this caiuse and the canae ought to prevail, and Iam firmly conviaced it will prevail, 1 will vote the ticket and heartily support it. It is necessary for this Government that the Republican ticket be elected thie year.” Judge Davis is a very influential man in Illinois, and his decided stand for Blaine and Logan will help the Republicans in that State. os Marruew McE roy, General Committeeman of the County Democracy of New York, is out in a letter resigning from the General Committee and declaring for Blaine and Logan. Hesays: ‘I feel that I am but voicing the sentiments of hundreds of my Democratic neighbors whe in the past have worked faithfully by my side in the cause of Democracy.” Sister Stow of the Woman's Equal Rights Party, had a meeting last S8unday at San Francisco at which that lady’was nomiaated for Vice-President. Mrs. Stow made a speech, in which the Alta. reporter made the lady say: ‘I have had two husbands, Both dead now. Two weeks from to-day I am going to have a ratification meeting.” Tur cartoon in Munsey’s Illustrated Weekly, representing the Democratic circus, is very rich. The pictorial is fast taking the place of Harper’s Weekly. Its illustrations are ahead of Harper’s, and its literary make-up is superior in every respect. Drop Harper’s and take Munsey’s—you will not regret the exchange. ; Ea EE Ss Tue Georgetown Gazette is some« thing of a political curiosity. The first and second pages are devoted to Blaine and Logan; the third page to Cleveland and Hendricks; and the fourth to advertising. Each politioal page hasits editor. H. W. Hulbert formerly of Sutter county, is the publisher. . 5 eatin Tue Prohibition National Conventien has issued a call asking the peopleto pray for the success of the cause. It has appointed October 29th asa day of fasting and humiliation and eonfession of the crime upon the people by the government permitting licensing in the traffic in liquor. Outo has already slipped from the grasp of the Democracy, and Barnum with all his mules can’t save the State from going Republican next Tuesday, BORN. At Nevada City, Oct. 7, 1884, to T. C. One of themembers of the bar in Saratoga, who thoroughly enjoys s good joke, relate the following and applies the moral to himself: Not long since he was counsel in a case before Judge Pratt, referee, and during the progress of the trial became a little bit noisy, as he sometimes does, when the Judge looked up and saidto him: “Mr. ——, did you ever hear of the man who was lost in the woods during « thunder storm?” On being answered in the negative, the Judge continued:— “A man, in attempting to pass through a piece of woods, lost his way, and while he was in that predicament a fearful thunderstorm came up. The woods grew awfully dark. The roar of the wind and the crashing of the thunder was terrific. The man was frightened and started to pray, but not being used to that business, he said: ‘Oh! Lord, give us a little more light and a li(tle less noise!’ I don’t mean you, Mr. ——,” added the Judge, but the audience supposed all the time the Judge did mean him, and now that he thinks of it himself he inclines to that opinion also. : Wonper if St. John and Butler both think the contest lays between “Blaine and me?” : ——— sr arnaaeaneciadl bea CasToriA Infants and Children. ‘Withont or Ni What gives our Chfidren rosy checks, What cures taeir fevers, eepy wea aaasst at tacts ee SRE, Ml then. to Morpliine Syrupq, gator oll and Ferogade, ana ° t: ~~Anab= solute cure for Rheumatism, Sprains, Burns, Galls, &c., and an instantaneous Pain-relicver, Republican Nominations.
