Prestnr Peace ts a Miri.—We dislike to say anything more! wporthe subject
of peace. The thing is atale apd people are
tized of it. We think that there is nothing
80 foolish in.ancient mythology or in modern
humbugs as the cry, peace! peace! or the
existence of a peace party at the present.
time. “Peace must be had by erushing the’
rebellion or by letting the rebellim crush
the nation These are.the only ‘conditions
upon which it is possible to have peace. It
you have it upon the second of these propo«
sitions, namely, by Jetting the rebellion crush
the nation, What 18 the result? Separation .
inevitable. ~Tlaving allowed the slave
States to leave you have established a precedent for the subdivision of the remaining
States, atid ina short time the United States
~ would be broken up inte small, unimportant
54
pey
sections, like the States of Gennany, weak
and growing weaker with the advance of
time. g a
In’ the first place, separation would eatabs
lish a line between the Contederacy and the
United States which would include within
the former all that country south’of the Obio
river, south of the north line of-the Missouri,
for the dividing line in the West, including
the new State of West Virginia: and the
southern portion of the old State. This
would be the territorial result of peace at
the preseut time. Of its political and moral
‘effects no tongue can tell, no pen can’ write.
“After giving new. life to the rebellious sentiment of the South and permitting it to have
its own way, to build np a military power
while we allow ours to dissolve, to again
Save possession of the forts and arsenals of
ithe United Statés, again to control the naresume its wonted impudence, its-demand
for territory. its claim: for imaginary rights,
and another war, which would draw from
the country literally every man and every
dollar to overcome the advantage we had
allowed this damnable rebellion to obtain, would be inevitable. No sane man can
doubt but that one more Democratic adminjetration would. have ruined the country,
and there is no wan, who is nota candidate
for an insxne saylum, or who ought to be
one, but who knowa a peace administration
would ruin it now.
Let us then have peace upon the firet
proposition by crushing the rebellion. Let:
the cry then be war, war to the hilt war
till the Isat rebel musket shall have been
fired and the last regiment shall have lad
