Ly d The Nevada Daily Transcript, “Published Daily, Mondays Excepted, —sY— BROWN & CALKINS. itor. 4 L. 8. Catches, Be Brown, Business Manager. — Nevada County Oficial Press. SUNDAY, OCT. 21, 1883. ——_i A PICKED 11 of lawyers from Liverpool played <a cricket match with a picked .11 of lawyers from Manchester. The day was beautifully fine, and a large. company had assembled to see which set of lawyers had the most practice. With the first ball of the second over, however, a dispute arose and the 22 lawyers: gathered around, the umpire to argue the point, The argument continaed with no sign of abatement till 5 o’clock in the evening, at which time the umpire died. Great astohishment is felt that he held up bo long as he did, Mrs. Lanatry visited Wallstreet, in New York, Wednesday to call upon her lawyers, She was recognized by passers-by as she alighted from ber carriage. A crowd soon gathered to stare and hoot ‘at her. Street urchins called aloud for “Freddie,” and pelted her with remarks more or less complimentary about her person She was glad to escape into her counsel’s office, where she gave vent to her indignation at the outrageous conduct of the mob, A Lonpon (Enyland) dispatch of Friday says: There has been an explosion at the Wharncliff-Cartoon colliery, Yorkshire. When the explosion occurred five men rushed to the bottom of the shaft and were res‘cued, though injured. The men remaining in the pit number twenty. A search force was organized, but the falling of the roof of the pit retards the work. The explosion is attributed to a blast shot. ee A MEDICAL correspondent of an English journal says that the. advantages of asparagus are not sufficiently appreciated. Those who are saffering from rheumatism are cured ina few daysby feeding on this delicious esculent; and more chronic cases are much relieved, especially if the patient avoids all avids, whether in food or beverage. Tt seems that Mrs. A. J, Stewart will not leave a!l her vast wealth to Judge Hilton, for it is said she” has devoted $4,000,000 of her private fortune to establishing a non-sectarian college, in which tuition shall + be free. . This it is claimed, will be the largest and finest collegiate edifice in Ameria, if not in the world. —_— oe Taz Coeur d’Alene mountains, the scene of the latest placer mining excitement, are abont 200 miles north of Butte City, Montana, It is expected that there will be a big rush there next spring, but it is to}cold a country to winter fn, A Srrarrorp Ciry woman dreamed that she saw her husband kissjog a certain neighbor's wife, and she awoke and struck him across the face and broke his nose, A ‘man should never kiss with his nose even in his wife’s dreams, Curnvuanva alone for the calendar year will yield nearly $30,000,000 in bullion, more by nearly $5,009,000 than the whole republic has averaged during the last 60 years. The yield of Mexico for'the year approximates $80,000,000, In extracting a tooth for a young lady, Dr. Gill, of San Bernardino, somewhat injured her tongue, and she sued him for $1,000 damazes. On Thursday a jury rendered a verdict in favor of the defendant. Mrs. Lanatry is accompanied by her mother. If the mother is anything like the daughter the Philadelphis Call thinks it would be a .good idea if the grandmother should join the party as well, TuHeE Trustees ef the Garfield National Monument Association invite international competition, open to allartists, for a monument in honor of James A. Garfield, late President of the United States. Tue two men arrested at Halifax, Nova Scotia, charged with the unlawful possession of explosives, say they are American citizens and invoke the protection of the American * flag. * A ConsTanTinoPLe dispatch says it is believed that only 200 deaths were caused by the late eaithquake, ERTS eRe ue) Attention Royal Arch Masozs. The other day in England acoal mine was sold which was firat opened in the days of the Cwsars, and which has been worked at intervals ever since. The Salt Lake Tribune says: This fact indicates that mining is a tolerably permanent business after all. It is quite possible that furnaces will be smoking in this valley 2,000 years from now, for there is no valley in the world that is surrounded by more enduring mines. This should be an encouragement to gentlemen who spend their time in telling what uncertain business mining is. They should try to make arrangements to get back 500 years hence and see what the people will think of the business by that _ time, There will be failures of the crops bugs, and wire Worms, and locusts, there will be floods, droughts, cloudhursts, and snow-slides; there will be mildew, and before that time new and perplexing insects will abound to try the patience of the agriculturist, but the treasure left in the hills will be just the same; and men will turn the samé loving eyes to gold and silver that they do now. A good mine is about the safest and best property a man can get in this worl, and it is easier to secure now than it will be 500 years hence, +o 9 Polltcal Gleanings, Judge Hoadly, of Ohio, was not well, but is better now. The Holman boom is laughed at by Democrats South and West. Judge Foraker made 105 speeches in Ohio during the campaign. Judge Hoadly did fot make as many, The Democrats want to run Wendell Phillips ia the Massachusetts Senate in the seventh (Suffolk) district,” The happiest man in Ohio is Jobn Sherman. He is blessing’ the lucky resolution that kept him off the State ticket. The latest political play on words is, “read the returns from Ohiowa,”’ appearing exclusively in Democratic newspapers. The next important State eleotions will be on November 5th— ‘those of Massachusetts, New York Pennsylvania, Virginia and Minnesota, Tue Ithaca (N. Y.) Journal says: ‘Whatever may be said of their chances in Maryland, the Democrats are sure of carrying Kentucky. In that State 54,956 white people can neither read nor write,” a TAs centennial anniversary of the “muster out” of the army under Washington was celebrated Thursday at Newburg, N. Y. Senator Bayard presided and Evarts was orator of the day. MAN must_now cease harping on the extravagance of woman’s dress, he census report credits man with expending $498,000,000 and woman but $317,000,000. F. E, Osborne, of No, 273 Ogden Avenue, Jersey City, pastor of the First Baptist Church, West Hoboken continued: ‘‘That’s what . did with Parker's Tonio ; I tried the experiment. It more than met my expectations, and Iam very glad to testify to its excellence Itgoes atonce tothe root of all digestive and nervous derangements so commonamony men. of my profess‘on. For women and chronic invalids the Tonic is a per‘. fectinvigorant, andis destined to supplent all other remedies forthis purpose. A single dose produces the gentle perspiration and sense of life which eradicates disease, It seeins to rouse every organ into activity, I admire it, too, for its power to antognize tne hold of the liquor habit over inebriates.”’ This preparation, which has been known as PARKER’s GINGER Tonic, will hereafter be called simply Parker's Tonic, As unprincipled dealers are constantly deceiving their customers with inferior articles under the name of ginger ; and as ginger is really an pain rerent flavoring ingredient, we drop the misleading word. There will be no change, however, in the He ewgegt ia itself, and all the bottlesin the ands of dealers, wrapped under the name cf PaRKgR’s GINGER Tonic, contain the genuine medicine if the fac-similie signature of Hiscox & Co. is at the bottom of the outside wrapper, BiFreRSs In chronic dyspepsia and liver complaint and in chronic constipation and other obstinate diseases, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is beyond all comparison the best remedy that can be taken. As a means of restoring the strength and vital energy of persons who are sinking under the debilitating effects of painful disorders, this standard vegetable invigorant ig confessedly unequaled.
