The Advice of a Piender Who, Neglected His Opportunities. Nestor A. Young, Republican candidate for the Assembly from, San Diego county, in 4 letter to, the papers a few days since, give: some solid sense that cannot be’ published too often. He says:— San Francisco. Meetingan old acquaintance who had preceded us . by ten. years, among. the first, things he said was, ‘Get a pidce-of; ie land.’ kindly enough, but, like a thons. and other admonitions we receive during life, it went. unheeded. We went into Sonoma county, and though we have never. met our friend since, a thousand times we have recalled his injunction, ‘Get a piece of ‘land.’ That sentence, short as it is, expresses the science which has made the fortunes of thousands of our well-to-do citizens: Itis the keystone which makes and keeps the best portion ofa State’s inhabitants honest, prosperous and independent. We recall many bargains in land of which we might have availed ourself. We were offered land in the Russian valley for $25 per acre. ‘We walked over sunny slopes and lovely table lands one hot day and refused to buy for $10 per acre. That same land today can not be had, much of it, for $500 ,-er acre! ‘When, later on, we witnessedthe intelligent management of the for. q tunate owners of these lands, many of whom were becoming rich,. not only from the production of the land, but from its enhancement in value, the advice of our friend would come up, and no one could abuse our want of good sense more than we. *-Many of us know of properties here and there today which be token thrift and wealth, and which have made their: possessors independent, yet those ‘same places were had for a mere trifle. Some of them were offered to us, but no, some fool told us the land was too stony, had clay or adobe, and we . didnot think it. wise. to ‘get.a piece } of land.’ secure land in large an { small lots which will double, triple and quadruple in price in less than five years. Tl.eman who cannot see this is not sudden enough for this climate.’’ Ts. estion.
