Fe ¥ = rm lotber Judge. ft, erry DAILY TRANSCRIPT. _™ Pin dente’ vole of the late Re-. " NEVADA umTY, CAL.’ We ia coalibly inte informed that an anwarranted and underhanded ‘effort is being made to prejudice the Sree Sens agniont Them dete for Sheriff. A report has bees pet in ‘cireulation that when Mr. Mein was Superintendent of the _ @pimion, and also expressed it, that “a dollar and a half a day was @nough to pay any workingmn.” “Another statement made is that while Superiatendent of the Derbee he used bis influence with ‘the Company to have the wages reduced from $3 to $2 50 a day. Where Mr. Mein iswell known these slan=. ers cannot possibly work him any “jnjary, but there are in the county many new comers who might if they were allowed to go uncontradicted peleve there was some foundation for them. Knowing Mr. Mein to have always been the friend of the laboring classes, it has been our pleasure to look into the charges now brought against him. We find that while Superintendent of the Pittebarg a scheme was put on foot to cut down the wages of that and other mines. Immediately upon hearing of this Mr. Mein went to ~ @atly against the move, threatening to resign his situation rather than be a party to it, that the contemplated redaction was not made. Mr. Mein’s position at thst time on the wages question is well known to many Democrats, among whom we might naine . avid McLean ot this city who tinder him for . seveu years, As to the Derbec affair, it is well-known to the old employes that Mr. Mein opposed successfully for some time the proposition of the Company to reduce the wages to $2 50 a day; that the reduction was accomplished when he had quit the place atid been succtéed:d by Capt. Cox;and that the miners by striking brought the price up to its former level. A. B. Brady of Grass Valley, a prominent Democrat, had quite a thorough knowledge of the affsirsof the mine then. To him we would refer voters as to where Superintendent Mein stood in respect to the wages of miners, He is the man who years ago spent $7,000 of’ his own money prospecting on Gold Flat, this township, and never during that time hired a Chinaman or paid a white man less than $3 a day. That is the kind of man Tom Mein, the Republican candidate for Sheriff, is, and we can prove it all on Democratic authority. PUREE BER METEDEE I PSE AES ANTI-BEBRIS CONVENTION. The. Anti-Debrie Convention met in Sacramento yesterday to nominate an anti-slickens ticket, or select nominees from the Republican and Democratic State tickets. We hope they coneluded to put a new ticket in the field, forin that event the people of “the State will have agoud chance to know how insignificant in number, the fanatical crowd is. Realizing this fact, the more intelligent of the delegates, no doubt favored a selection of names from the two great political parties. A correspondent of the Maryaville Appeal, who signe! himself an ‘‘Old Line Republican” aaid that policy would seem to dictate that no new nominations should be made, as it would exhibit a paucity of numbers that ‘would not place the cause in a favorable or true light—which mistake is above all things to be avoided for the sake of the cause.” But ifa new ticket was to be placed in the field, ‘‘Old Line Republican” suggested that the convention should agree with the disaffected Republicans and Democrats to consolidate;~-and™ in anyevent Hart for Attorney General and Denson for Supreme Judge shou'd be eountedin. The Bee of the same day “mdorsed those two and wanted Sharpstein to be agreed upon as the These fellows realize the fact that the isolated vote of the fanatics would indeed be insigaifitherefore cant, and think they . desld aos the names from the reégular parties or consolidate with soreheads, 20 that afterjelection they may say, as the fly did when perched upon the back of the elephant, *‘What # hell of adust we do kick up.” =e é Ax eastern journal furnishes the gratifying intelligence that a record hag been kept of the 400 Vasear Col. lege girls who have married off in the last fifteen years, and thirty of them ‘ere reported to have husbands worth over $2,000 each. Nevertheless it is a great comfort for a man to return ; from his work and have his little wife meet him at the. gate in four languages and a landscape. Tava Rian . killed James Ryan at Greencastle, Ind,, on’ the 26th of _ August, with a blow with his fist, ne sahish bapa Ryan's ack. Atomens wilitery egg: tea at ai screen -. out the anti-slick “. endorses it. publican feats Convention of 383 to f6, by which the Convention strack en’ plin offered by the Committee on ations, is a pretty feir indication of the relative strength of the miners and their opts. — Post. The Nevada Tras-cripr publishes the above extract from the Post in its editorial.columa. and . therefore But the other day the Tran-crirt said this vote did not touch the merits of the issue between the hydraulic miners and farmers, and was simply « declaration that anti-slickens was not a political question and had no business in the Convention. . The Appeal predicted that the hydranlie mining journals would claim this voteasan ex pression of public opinion adverse to the dub debris Cause, and the Trax-crirt poohed st the ides.. The Appeal claimed that this apparent vote against the cause, was not obtained on the merits of the issue but as the result of an understanding that the uestion should be repudiated by the avestion from policy, as well as the result of an understanding between espirante beforetiat body asking 8 nomination, Bat the Post now comes in and says “the vote is a pretty fair indication of the relative strength of the mivers and their opponents.” The Post makes the vote a test on the hydraulic and ‘anti-hydraulic question. This is just what the. Appeal said the hydraulic mining journals would claim, and the pr was denounced by the TRANSCRIPT as imaginary and chimerival. —Appeal. For a first-class damphool, give tts the editor of ‘the Appeal. His chief @im seems to be to see how great misrepresentations he can indalge in when treating of the slickens question. The article from the Post was copied into the Transcgier without comn:ent, and when the Appeal says we ‘‘therefore endorse it,” the editor writes a. contemptible falsehood. The Appeal copies an article aboat a man committing rape on a ten year old girl, and by. that paper’s reasoning we would jbe justified in asserting in positive terms that ‘‘therefore the Appeal endo:ses taping ten-year-old girls.” We have all.long maintained that, xthe vote of the convention did not touch the merits of the issue between the farmers and miners, but was simply a. declaration that anti-slickens was not @ political question, and had no business.in the convention. It was kicked out, as it should have been, by a vote of about three to one, to the great chagrin of the fanatics who seek to destroy the main industry in this section. The delegates reyarded the subject as a local one and de clared it was not proper for the pzople of the whole State to be.wrung into it, Tie hydraulic miners have coutended from the first that the subject should not become entangled with politics, and we challenge the Appeal, or any one else, to cite a solitary instance where this plan has been deviated from im the least particular. Now let the Appeal give us any.evidence to the contrary, or stand branded as guilty of wilful misrepresentation. LETTS ATTORNEY GENERAL HART. During the last campaign, when he was a candidate as now, Attorney General Hart made a speech in every county, From a Republican who was in San Francisco a few days ago, we learn that he will not this Fall canvass the State. What does this mean? We do not think it is right for a few of the nominees on the State ticket to do all the speechmaking. It is the duty of each eandidate to give his best efforts to the cause, and we hope the State Centra! Committee will not consent to allow any of them to shirk their duty. Our people are anxious to see and hear all of them. Attorney General Hart need have no misgivings about being treated courteously in this section by all c'asses of people, the hydraulic miners included. His name will draw a big crowd . in the mining towns.
