“A MAMMOTH INDUSTRY.
Two Representative Hydraulic Mines
—How they Earn and spend Money—Figures that Speak Loudly,
Among the many large hydraulic
mines of Nevada county, perhaps
the general reader knows as little
concerning the operations of the Milton: and the Malakoff claims as of
any Others, They are both “close
dorporations,” conducting business
on the same general principles that a
wise mercantile or ‘manufacturing
‘firm would. There is no stock on
the market, the owners being mainly
residents of this State who hold
their interests for the legimate profits
to be derived therefrom.
The writer during a revent visit to
the upper part°of the county passed
along the line of these companies’
workings, aud will give in the briefest possible space a report of what
he saw there,
Bowman Lake (belonging to the
Malakoff) has a capacity of seven
billion gallons, and Milton reservoir
4(owned by the Milton company) of
four and a half billions ;_ besides
which are five smaller, but nevertheless important, lakes belongiffg to the
same propeities. To convey water
from these to the mines are lines of
ditches aggregating one hundred and
fifty miles in length. These-seven
lakes and all. the ditches cost in
round numbers
A MILLION AND A HALF
of dollars to construct, and seventy
thousand dollars per annum to maintain. They are among the greatest
marvels of engineering skill that the
world can boast, and neither has expense been spared nor the teachings
of science and past experience been
avoided in the effort to make them
lasting and to secure perfect safety
to the country below them. The
stone dams are practicably indestruetible, and although some of
them have now stood for two decades more or less we have yet to record signs of weakening in any of
them, to say nothing of a break never having occurred. The ditchcs
winding down from the source of
supply traverse some of the roughest
country to be found in California’s
mountainous regions. Through almost bottomless gorges, along the
back bunes of sharp ridges, and sometimes in wooden flumes that are suspended by chains along atraight-faced, beetling crags three hundred feet
above the base and almost as far
from the summit, then in iron pipes
across threadlike trestles as high
asthe topsof the giant trees that
stand in the vales to be crossed, the
water in streams large enough to
FLOAT GOOD-SIZED BOATS
rushes from the fastnesses of the Sierras down into the foot-hills of this
county, where it is used in washing
trom the dead river channels the
countless millions of gold that ‘has
accumulated there during the past
ages and the harvesting of which for
the world’s enrichment has but just
begun as yet,
The annual expenditure of $70,000 required to keep in repair thigreat system of reservoirs and canals
isin no measure met by sales to
ranchers, and is never likely to’ be,
as the owners calculated upon when
projecting their schemes, There is
no farming or vine growing land dependent on their ditches, aud what
little water they can manage to dispose of for domestic: purposes and to
other hydraulic miners in the region
traversed, realizes so insignificant a
suiu that it is not worth considering.
Therefore, ev:rything has te depend
on the mines for the benefit of which
the improvements were originated,
and should those mines fail for any
reason to become productive the
whole water system would naturally
go to ruin, racer
The Milton and Malakoff companies together employ regularly about
four hundred men (all white) a majority of whom have families, and
the wages range from $2.50 per day
of ten-hours, upwards, according to
the experience of the employe and
the nature of his work. Operations
are carried on night and day all the
year around, electric lights being used
when the sun sinks below the _horizon, Pitch pine fires were formerly
kindled to ‘
FURNISH LIGHT AT NIGHT-TIME,
but elegtricity is now made ta serve
the end to infinitely greater. advantage and at a much less cost.
The two mines produce annually
about one million of dollars,
These. and the other hydraulic
mines ou that ridge are the principal
{support of the towns of Eureka.
_, very high, and “don’t you forget it.” South, Moore’s Flat, Relief Hill,
Lake City, Columbia Hill, North
. Bloomfield, Cherokee, North San
Jyan, Sebastopol, Sweetland, French
Corral and: Birchville. They are all
furtiished with fine schoothouses cost‘ing upwards of $30,000, and most of
them boast one or more large churcheseach, 1 have handgome “public halls, lodges and societies in great
number, good hotels, thrifty business
by the dozens, and all the ether
concomitantg of an advanced civilizatian.
A FALLAC¥ EXPLODED,
It hag heen a pet ‘argument of such
authorlties as the Bee and the Appeal.and :heir allies that the cessa.
tion of hydraulig mining . would, if
Brought about, be ‘followed with tle
working of the au iferous channels
by the drifting proceas, which would
giveemployment to a largely increased force of laboring men, keep
‘up the regular output of bullion, and
be less profitable to thé owners dilly.
They hold that by such a change the
mipés Would produce as much gold
asby the present method, only being exhausted less quickly. Such
reasoning will not hold good in the
face of the facts, Deifting is practicable only in such channels as the
Bald Mountain of Sierra county,
Where the gold is concentrated within afew feet of bedrock ; whereas’
the channels of Nevada county range
from 100 to 500 feet in depth and
the gold is scattered all through them.
We do not know’of a drift mine in
this county that has paid, excepting
in small spots, and even these have
been the exception. Only twenty
per cent of the gold in a claim is ordinarily realized by drifting, while
it can all be saved by the -hydraulic
method, Again, the North Bloom‘field Company, for instance, has worked out halfa mile of its three or
four miles of ground, expending for
labor in_that distance the sum of
$800,000. “That much would have
been drifted inless than half the
time, and not—more~than—$350;0007
would have been realized as the gross
yield. i

THE YOUNG REPUBLICANS.

River Mining.
Juan Saturday as a gia jto the
Joint Senatorial Convention, and
this is among the sights he saw on
the way: A company of Chinamen
are working the bed of the South
Yuba at Bridgeport, having a strip
of ground from 350 to 200. feet in
width and about one-half mile in
length, drained and a substantial
embankment built along the whole
length, which is closely faced with
planking, to keep out the waters af
the river, which aye turned to flow
along the opposite bank. Itis a big
mining enterprise, and. fram the
labor and expense put upon it it is

9th Day of October Can Vote.
County Clerk Carr inforins us that
many people are of the opinion ° they.
can vote this Fall even if their names
are not on the printed Great Register,
Such is not the case. The law is plaia
upon the subject, and no person can
vote on a certificate. Section 1227
of the Political Code, which was
enacted on purpose todo away with
votes on certificates, says: “If the
register in use at the precinct where
the vote is offered, and the vote is not
rejected upon a challenge taken, the
Inspector, or Judge acting as such,
must, in the presence of the Board of
Election, place the ballot, without
Opening or examining the same, in
the ballut-box,and no person shall be
‘allowed to. vote whose name is’ not
on said register in ‘use at the: precinct.”
This act was approved March 30th,
1878, and of course, under the ruling
of the Supreme Court, repeals the
actor section 1117, which was approved March 30, 1874. Monday,
October 9th, 1882, is the last” day a
voter van be enrolled and appear on
the.printed register for use at the
voting precincts, therefore no person
can vote at the coming election who
is registered afterthat date.
