Mr. Ronianes, in his book on “Mental Evolution ig Animals,” gives some curious illustrations of modified instincts due to ear.y association or training. A terri. r pup, brought'up with a kitten, ben to bound like a cat, played with mice y letting them run for a distance and pounncing on them, licked his paws and rubbed them over his ears. Miss Mitford, in ler Letters, records similar habits ina King Charles terrier, which . belonged to no less a personage than the venerable Dr. Routh, President of M lene Col'ege, Oxford. This d rad. been suckled and reared by a cat, havin: lost its own mother. He always show the proverbial cat-like dread of wet feet, and never.went out in rain; licked his paws several times in ths day for the ead ap of washing his face, sitting the while upon his tail in the true cattish position ; watchied a mouse-hole for houra together; and had, in short, all the ways, manners, and dispositions of his feline foster-mother. The Emperor of. China and His Wives. The young Emperor of China has just been engaged in the occupation of selecting three ladies as brides from amongst thirty-two assembled at his palace. These are tollected from all over Manchuria from certain noble Manchu families, and have travelled some. of them for hundreds an«t even athousand miles to Pekin to undergo review. The future Empress is tirst selected, and then two assistants, called the Eastern and Western Kmpresses. This is the ancient custom of the Empire-since the Manchus became its rulers. The Emperor will take over the rvins of power next year. In the tombe of ancient Egypt wom. en’s shoes have been found having soles of wood, to which are affixed four round rop3—a. sort of foot-stool fixed to the eet, and raising the wearer about a foot in height. ‘The shoes were laced in front. Personal. Mr. N. H. Frolichstein, of Mobile, Ala., writes: I take great pleasure in recommending Dr: King’s new discovery for Consumption, havinu used it for a severe attack of Bronchitis and Caiarrh. It gave me instant relief and entirely cured me,and I have not been afflicted since. Ialso beg tostate that I had tried other remedies with no good result. tric Bitters and Dr. King’s New Life Pills, both of which I can recommend, Pr. It ranks among the first luxuries of our house.” Miss Kate Rose, Ingersoll, Ontario, writes: ‘ While : keeping my head clear of dandruff, and preventing Scald Head, Ayer'’s Hair Vigor has algo caused my hair to grow luxuriantly, resulting in my riow possessing hair forty-two inches long, and as thick as could be desired.” The wife of Dr. V. S. Lovelace, Lovelaceville, Ky., had very bad tetter sores upon her head, causing the hair to fallout. When the glands are decayed and gone, no stimulant can restore them; but, when they are only inactive, from the need of some excitant, the application of Ayer'’s Hair Vigor will renew their vitality, and a new growth will result. L. V. Templeton, Newbern, N, C., writes: “After a protracted {Ilness, with fever, my hair all came out, leaving me entirely bald, I procured a bottle of Ayer’s Hair Vigor, and, before I had used all its contents, a thick growth of heir, nearly two Inches long, coyered my head.” »L.D. McJunkin, Perryville, Md., writes: ‘Baldness is hereditary {n my family. Five years ago the hair on the top of my head was be coming weak and thin. I procured Ayer's . Hair Vigor, the application of which invigorated the hair roots, and sent out a new growth of young hair. To-lay my hair {s‘as thick and vigorous as ever, 1 still use the Vigor occasionally to keep my scalp in a healthy condition.” san’ VIGOR. Improvement. Assoctation 2. M. PRESTON, E, J. RECTOR — J. From the first fruit that ripened in the song to ths last to come—the quince— there have been great expectations atl little realization, The strawberry crop was very unsatisfactory. The cherry crop was the greatest failure in many years, yet the trees hung full with fruit, even to the ripenin. season, but exc.'ssive rains just at the critical time destroyed the crop. The rainy season followed the cherry-ripening season from Virginia to Canada. The Haison river raspberry crop was literally washed from canes. ‘I'he currant crop was leas than a third of what was exp -cted’ The peach orchards fron Virginia to New York, have refused to yield anything like the quantity of fruit expected of them. The Huilson river grape crop will be but-~a little more than one-half the amount expected by the grower so late ad midsummer. The apple crop, as the time for gathering it approaches, seems to be less romising. ‘uta light crop of qu nees s expectdin Western New York, whers most of that fruit) that is sold in this city is produced. The only fruit that has been nearly up to expectation in thy quantity yielaed was the Bartlett p:ar crop.’ ‘hey have been abundant, of tine quality, although somewhat under size and cheap.—N. Y.
