There are few men in Washi m better known or better liked than David K.
Cartter, Chief Justice of the Supreme
Court of the District. His ability asa
lawyer, his rectitude as a judge, his
geniul qualities as a man, all combine to
make him a favorite. ‘
Among his vere possessions he owns
a fine ranche at Great Bend, Kansas,
This place is in charye of his son.
Young Cartter loves the good things of
life. The good things of life cost money,
and sometimes the young man has felt
it necessary to make a draft on his fond

Last spring Judge Cartter informed his
son that he would pay him a visit during
the summer vacation of court. The

about a hundred head. These he drove
over to his own ranche,
When thesenior Cartter arrived, the
son took him out and showed him the
fine ‘‘bunch” of cattle he had bought at
a bargain. The elder Cartter was delighted, and when the youngster ex.
plained that he needed a couple of
thousands of dollars:to finish paying for
the cattle, he atonce gave his check for
the amount.
After the Judge had completed his
visit, the son.cashed the check, returned
the ‘‘bunch” of cattle to his friend, and
the time he and his fellow-ranchero had
is still spoken of approvingly by the
