EUREKA DISTRICT. WEDNESDAY, OOT. 19, 1887. THE FOOTHILLS. The Value of the Rich, Rolling Fruitlands of Nevada County. The San Francisco Chronicle Bays: Without entering upon a scientific dis quisition on the characteristics of the grapes and wines of California, it may be said, in general terms, that the grapes, und consequently the wine, partake of the character of tlie soil in which th. y grow: or, to put itin ad fferent: way, the richer the goil the richer the grape. The great objection which has been found to the red wines of this State is their earthy taste an. their super: bundance of alcohol. It has been claime , ani! has been seemningly demonstFated, that by going up ‘on thé Killsides, where the soil“is lightér and really less fertile, the<e otijee-~ tionable features are, \in a great meas ure, elimin.ted, and that the wine is lighter, less alcoholic, more nearly fre from the unpleasant earthy taste, and more like the light red wines o France, which are the standard fur that kind of wine. A recent article in the daily press on the subject of olive cultu®% and the manufacture of olive oil, stated that some Italian gentlemen who had mad a study ofthe sulject here, were inclined to believe that the fertility ot the avil of the valleys is Opposed to the best development of the olive, an. that success in the manufacture of oi wi.l be best attained by planting olive orchards on the hillsides and on th flanks of the mountains. The olive, they say, is a hardy tree, and wants « judicious amount of negiecf to mak. it do its best. It may be killed with kindness, but not often by being let alone. We understand that tle suxgestion has been adopted and that olive groves aré to be set out in the fuothil!: and a thorough test made of the Ital -jan idea. The foothills have already acquired a well-dererved celebrity for those fruits which, for want of a more ap propriate name, are called deciduous. The county exhibits at the receni Mechanics’ Fair showed what some ot the mountain counties can do in. the way of fruit, and the only regret is that many of the other counties were not represented. In considering the possibilities ot California and the future of the State nv portion can properly be neglected. Every year some new district or county or town comes tothe front, to the won der of ali, with some product tha: never wag heard of before in connection with that locality, or with som: extraordinary yield, in quantity o: quality or both, of some fruit. r othe: product of the soil, and is a nine-days’ wonder, until superseded by some other equally favored locality. It may be fairly s.id that the foothills of the Sierras are especially deserving the attention of horticulturists, and that they bid fair to be the choice part o1 the State for many purposes. Aa Complaint. Various citizens are finding faul: with the present arrangement by which the town is left without a watch man after two o’cluck a’ night. They say that the hours when he is off duty are the very ones when it is most important that he should be abroad. The danger from burglars and fire: is greater then than during tne ear lier part of the night when people are out and around. It is urged that it the‘ rustees must as # matter of econ omy let him off a portion of the night. they better make his hours of duty from ten o’clock-p. M. til daylight, in stead of from six.P. mM til two a.m. as now. . uch, Oe Water Power Improvements. W: J. Organ came down this week from Washington township, where he has had charge of the cc nstraction of awater system to furnish power fo: the Washington quartz mine at Ormonde. He built nearly a mile of ditch and flume. In the South Yuba river he constructed a dam 12 feet high and 160 feet long at its top. It i made of logs 30 inches in diameter and 65 feet long bolted to the bedrock 80 firmly that there is no likelihood. ot its being injured by floods. It raises 5C0 inches of water into the ditch. i ceeeaieeenninnionnminentemoteneitaemame ate Said handsome Tom to smiling Nell, “Where did you find that mystic spell That hovers ‘round your every smile, And would my throbbing heart besuile?” Quoth laughing Nell, “You silly boy, In SOZODONT,—the cream of joy.” The Very Latest Style. Epirok Nevapa Transcript—Th General Land Office has recently for -nd lonely section he has pinned. his faith to, and he is getting encouraying prospects. The Eureka district has never before had so much activity in quartz mining as it enjoys now, and it promixe to soon be able to show a number of the best-paying properties in the county, The Snancial resources o. most of the claim owners there are limited, but in spite of that drawouck they are getting compuratiyels yood returns for their labor in every instance.
