—Membership, Ete.
About two hundred Republicans assemmbledat the Theater on Saturday
evening to take pait in the organization
of a Republican Club. The meeting was
called to order by District Attorney
. Frank T. Nilon, and N. P. Brown was
. leetad temporary chairman. The club
then proceeded to organize, by electing
the following permanent” flicers:
Presid nt— Hon, J. Sims.
Secretary—Sherman W. Marsh.
Vice Presidents—G. L. Hughes, John
T. Morgan, Senator E. M. Preston, B. F.
Snell, N. P. Brown.
Treasurer—D, E. Morgan.
On Constitution and By-Laws-—Judge
J. M. Walling, Senator E. Mz Preston,
Geo. F, Jacobs, District Attorney F, T,
Nilon, A. R. Lord. ee
The Executive Committee to be appointed by the President, and report
ut next meeting, :
Finance Committee—Wm, T. Morgan,
Senator E. M. Preston, Henry Lane,
James A. Northway, M. lL: Marsh, E>
A. Tompkins, Chas.. E. Mulloy, Perry
Arbogast, Thos. Hughes and R. Sim.
On'niotion of Senator Preston it-was!
unanimously carried that the club be
valled ‘fhe Harrison Club of Nevada
fownship.”’
A. D. Mason, who has taken the most
prominent part in the formation of the
club, reported that the list of _members
autmbered two hundred and nineteen, and
$102 had been subscribed towards defraying the expenses of the club,
Notice was given that the Finance
Committee would meet at the oftice of
W. T. Morgan this evening, and the
Committee on Constitution and By-Laws
will also meet this evening at the office
of Judge Walling.
Short, but good, speeches were made
by Judg Walling, Senator Preston, Hon.
J. Sims, District Attorney Nilon and A.
“‘R. Lord,
On motion the chairman of the club
was recuested to engage a yood speaker,
beside himself, to address the club next
Saturday evening at the ‘Theater, and
uso instructed to give public notice
f the meeting, inviting not only Republicans but Democrats, Popularists,
and especially the ladies, wi h the end in
view of having a rousing meeting.
A band of music‘will also be secured
for that occasion.
Ou motion it was unanimously carried
that the thanks of the Repul, ican Party
of Nevada township be most heartily
t ndered to Hon, A. D. Mason for the
work he had acéomplished in giving the
club such a splendid start in the campaign.
The club adjourned until ,Saturday
evening next, when the various commnittees. Will make their reports, and the
organization ef the club bperfected.
Immediately after the club adjourned;
some fifteen or twenty more nanies were
added to the list, and about $20 more
subseribed to the club fund.
It is expected when the club meets on
Saturday evening that the membership
will be increased to about 400.
We cannot recall a time, at the commencement of a campaign, when Republicans became so earnest for the success of the Republican party as was
manifested at the meeting on Saturday
evening, and most assuredly it was a good
omen. :
The club did a nice thing ‘when they
tendered a vote of thanks to Mr. Mason,
for surely . .e accomplished what few men
inthe party could or would “have done,
that of canvassing the town for members
of the club and solicit mg subscriptions to
meet the campaign expenses, when he
was only a high private. Mr. Mason.did
the work voluntarily and without. solicitation on the part of any one, and therefore we say he is the more deserving of
the thanks of the Republican party of
this township.

IT WAS SMITH.
He Becomes Despondeat and Takes His
Life.
Fred Filern.an has received from San
Francisco a picture of the man found
dead near the Presicio a few days ago.
The picture was taken after the body
was removed to the morgue, and shows
that the dea! nan was Henry Smith of
this city. He committed suicide by shooting himself through the head, Swmith
left here for Sau Francisco about a mouth
ago. He had of la e béen quite deapondent by spells, and more than ouce remarked that when he got tired of living
he inten led to go offwhere he was not
known and blow his brains out.
Smith resided in this county many
years, He came to California in ’49 or
60 and mined for awhile on the American river, where he was very successful.
A few yedrs later he ‘returned to the
States on a visi, having at that time
about $20,000. He returned in‘ a year
or two and located in this county. For
many years he lived at Malakoff. The
stopping of hydraulicking prevented him
from working his mining claim there and
three or four years ago he removed to this
city, living for some time with his brother,
on the latter's ranch a few miles froin
town, on the Newtowu read,
It is.said that his monéy had become
exhausted, he was too old and infirm for
hard labor, aud brooding ovér his’ misfortunes had doubtless affected his mind.
He was unmarvied, a native of Germany,

fiome Allegea tiig Salaries,
The story is being told in New York
that the proprietor of a certain well
known morning newspaper has made'an
offer to asuccessful publisher of Olidcaso to come to New York for five yeure
atin annual salary of $100,000. Whether
this report be true or not, it has occa
sluned a good deal of gossip,
Perhaps in nothing inere than in the
question of salaries is there so mach
that is natrue. . have no doubt
there area small number of gentlemen
who are paid from $25,000 to $100,000 a
year for their services, but whether they
are worth it or not is another-question
The tendency is always to exaggerate
onthe salary qnestion anyhow, and it
is more than likely that not half the
sum mentioned is actually paid any
man, i
It is the seine way with the authors
of books, Atittle while ago it was said
that Ward McAllister had received $25,00 for his published volume on ‘Soci.
ety a8 . Have Found It.” Mr, McAllister now comes forward and spoils this
pretty tiction by statifig positively that
be received only about $3,700, and that
ia why he hesitates about accepting an
offer thitde to him by a Chicago firm of
pees He @ays there is no money
in books,
The men who are paid $100,000 a year
in New Yark for any services whatever
Those
who receive $50,000 could probably be
numbered juside of a, hundred. Those
who receive $25,000 a year are of course
more numerous, but there are not enough
of them to canse any very general digturbance in financial centers.
