WORK ON THE RIVER.
—
The Contract For Constructing the Yuba River
Cut Cif Has Been Awarded.
+
°
In accordance with notice heretofore published, the bids were opened Wednesday in
the office of . Major Heuer, in San Francisco, and the contract awarded for constructing the Yuba river cut off, er new mouth,
opposite Marysville, says the Democrat,
There were five bids but enly two proposals
were considered and the difference im price
‘was very sinall as between that of the California Construction Company and Wm. Elliott, Sr., of Gridley, the two being as follows in detail: '
Mr. Elliott’s bid for the 236,000 cubic
yards of earth wa: 174 cents per cubic yard;
for 1,000 tons of reck, $6 per ton and for
2,500 cubie yards of brush, $1 per
cubic yard.
The California Construction Company’s.
bid fer 236,000 cubic yards of earth, 172
~ cents per cubie_yard; for-t,000 tons of rock,
$3.40 per ton and for 2,500 yards ef brush,
$1 per cubic yard. oe :
The bid’ of Mr. Elliott was the lowest on
the excavating work and the eame as that
of the Construction Company on the cl-aring away of the lrush and timber, but he
lost’ on the estimate of stone work. The

“these figures will cost over $48,000, and
this will be paid as fast as the work 18° accepted by Major Heuer,
We are notadyised as to when the con‘tractors will beyia the werk,—but—presume
it will be done as soon as the contract is approved by the Secretary of War. Theseasonis-wellwdvancedand
it will havdly be
" possible to complete it this season hefore
the high water of next winter, as it ~will require a larger nomber of men and teams
than can be put on in time now.
To cut the timber and clear the ground a
distance of 2,5.:0 feet and 509 feet in width,
is not a small task, as wiil readily be seen
by these familiar with the situation. The
canal, as let, will be in dimensions 2,500
feet long, 340 feet wide on top and an average of thirteen feet in depth, the canal having the usval s'ope on each side.
The earth taken from. the channel will be
deposited on both sides of the eenal, which
will eventually wash inte the cut if not
placed some distance back from the banks,
as it is well known that the water at times
weaches a depth of ten or twelve feet at that
point. The earth taken out of the cut will
occupy the-sane space—on—the surface an it}
didbefore being excavated, and will not
~ give relief as to providing more room for the
-Wate that accumulates at this point when.
the two rivers are at a high stage. The canal will have less than six feet fall in the
distarice between the Yuba at the mouth
and where it will discharge into the Feather
iver, therefore it is difficult te understand
what is to prevent the filling of this cut,
particularly when the Lackwater from the
Feather sets a current up the Yuba until it
discharves into the cug and runs out past
‘the rifle range. However, there will be relief altorded the people of Yuba City by
‘constructing the canal, as it will change the
current of the river and break the force
that now strikes the bank squarely. It will
probably le of some benefit as a relief
to Marysville and the levee system, yet time
enly can determine it,
