Night before last a Vacaville constable aad deputy sheriff named Charles Bradley was intown on his way to Downie. ville in search of a fugitive from justice. About eight o’clock as: he was on a back street in the vicinity of the National Hotel he was suddenly struck on the shoulder by a man. Thinking the fellow was a garroter he pulled out his revolver and presented it at his assailant’s head. ‘Don’t shoot,” exclaimed a young colored-man who was with the fellow that struck the officer: It was then explained that the latter had been. mistaken for an acquaintance of the twain and the weapon was put away. Some time, ago officer Bradley had a gun-fight with two lawbreakers. He shot both of them, one seriously but not fatally,. and received in return a wound on one of his arms which left it partially crippled. MINER MeSHE AY. McSherry, formerly of the State of Nevada but for some eight years past a resident of Grass Valley, where he for a time conducted the Evening Star mine and more recently started up the Pennsylvaniamine which latter is still in operation, had got into some trouble inthe East for which part of the country he left on mining business two months ago. Mr. MeSherry has a wife and eight or nine children (the oldest ADMISSION DAY. Nevada County Natives_to be Numerous at Marysville. The Native Sons of Hydraulic Parlor are getting everything in fineshape to join in the Admission Day celebration at Marysville on September 9th. Close to fifty of them will go down in wagons, and they have made such arrangements that the transportation for the round trip of forty miles each way will cost them only $2.25.. All members living out of town who want to go are requested: to write immediately to Secretary Jehn T, iNilon so that provision can be made for carrying them. The committee will meet again tonight to adopt the uniform, the distinctive features of which will probably be light hats, black shirts, bright yellow sashes and walking sticks. They will leave here on the afternoon start for home on the morning of the 10th when the ball is over. They do not propose to miss any fun by going to sleep while they are gone. a At Grass Valley-last night the members of Quartz Parlor voted down a proposition for that Parlor to join with Hydrauli¢ Parlor in going to the celebration and assisting todefray the expenses of taking along Mountain Division Band. 4 number of the Quartzites expect to attend, however. : : The Appeal of yesterday morning says of the preparations the Natives of Maof the 8th about three or four o'clock and . ’ PERSONAL MENTION. Nevada City is of late getting into very bad ways, and those ways lead visitors from other places to remark in a sympathetic way that “the poor old town is getting run down at the heel."” Of course such expression of sympathy makes the citizen-hearing it both mad and ashamed, but there is no use in attempting to controvert it.The planked roadways and sidewalks were never so dilapidated. Loose and broken boards, collapsed foundations and projecting nailsive the whole town an appearancé of decay that is sickening. When the city trustees decide to have the business streets macadamized instead of planked, which it is now stated they . will sody do, an epidemic of improvement will be likely to spread to the furthermost confined of the corporation and Nevada City will once more present her old-time spruce and “attractive appearance.
