The Lecal Paper.
The local paper, says an exchange,
tells you when to go to church, when
to go.to the theater, eet oe
ly everywhere else you have to go. t
tells you-who is dead, married, sick,
hurt, and many other things you like
to hear. It calls your attention to all
“public enterprises, advocates: good
schools, Jaw and order in your town
and county. It rejoices with you in
your prosperity and sympathizes with
you in your-distress. It records the
marriage of your daughter, the death
of your son, the illness of your wife,
free of charge. It booms business
whether you patronize it or not. It
sets forth the attraction and advantage
of the town and invites immigration
and is always the first to welcome
newcomers. And this is not half of
what it does for its home people, and
yet we sometimes héar a man say his
home paper is not half so good as some city paper.
Geod Walkers.
The Examiner’ correspondent. at
the encampment at Santa Cruz of the
First Artiilery Regiment writes: The
beach is the great afternoon resort.
Sacramento and Nevada City ladies
are capital pedestrians and don’t mind
walking from the camp along a somewhat hilly road throngh the main
avenue of the city and-over the beach
hill to the city and back again.

This puzzled some of-the passengers,
and several turned to see what the-child}meant. But the “big brother” knew,
and immediately drew out a small mouth
harmonicon and placed it in: the little

dressed: The little fellow took the in‘strament into his thin hands, ran it
across his lips and began to play softly
“Nearer, My God, to Thee.” Tears

little fellow played on, running into
“Rock of Ages” and ‘“‘Abide with Me,”
there were many moist eyes in the car.
The little player seemed to have a re
markably true ear and occasionally,
when the instrument would rasp, he
would turn sadly to his ‘‘big brother”
and say, *‘Don’t whistle.”
The train rushed along,. the passengers listened and the little fellow
played on tirelessly, never missing a

ed the litbetween the dwellers by the lake
d the dwellers by the sea was the difference in their style of dress. New
York business men have long been punctilious in regard to their dress. It was
@ common thing to see not only the
young men but the older men going to
business in the morning with a flower in
the buttonhole and dressed as a ‘‘westerner” would have dressed for some social
event. In Chicago it was entirely different. Our best and wealthiest citizens
dressed in a manner that would ‘have
caused them to have been noticeable
upon Broadway:
They were too busy to care about or
even think about their clothes. Between
the fire and the panic and the big interest they had to pay it took all their en-,
ergies, both physical and mental, to contrive means to pay their eastern creditors. But times have changed since then.
Then were the days of hustle and anticipation. Now, while it is still the of
hustle, anticipation has graduated into
enjoyment. Then nothing was too good
for our creditors, now no’! is too
good for ourselves. Then "tee besten’
man wore clothing simply for protection
from the weather. Now he has time for
the amenities and pleasures of life and
the money to gratify his tastes,—Chicago Herald.
4 candidate who had failed in the
civil service examinations was exceedingly critical of the system. ‘‘I’m*not
ashamed to be unable to answer such
foolish questions,” he-said, ‘especially
with such high personal recommendations as I bad!”
