During the past few weeks the TranScRiPT haa received” about--a~dozen letters from as many different States asking for the information herein contained, and ,to sive-letter.-writing is the reason for this publication: First-Large areas of fertile lands, seeured by Government patent, can be purchased at such reasonable figures that a few hundred dollars is sufficient to pay fora small farm. ! : Secend—The standard fruits grown in this county are the finest of their varieties grown in the world. They are of a superior flavor and have a firmness of texture that gives them better shipping and keeping qualities than those grown at lower altitudes, and they find a ready market at remunerative prices. Third—The long summers permit of the rotation of crops, and the raising of two and even three different crops from the same land in a single season. Fourth—There ia a ready market for all farm products at good prices. Fifth—There are excellent-means of transportation, the railway penetrating the central portion of the county. Sixth—There is an abundance of timber. Seventh—There is an inexhaustible supply of pure water, both for irrigating and domestic purposes. Eighth—The temperature is mild, both} in summer and winter, and is not subject to sudden changes. : « Ninth—The climate will cempare favorably with that of any other section af the Pacific Coast, even with the most favored, there being no malaria with its resulting chills and fever, no violent winds, no fogs, Tenth—The children reared in this climate and at this altitude ‘above the sea usually acquire better physical constitutions, with more plumpiess and firmuiess~of-muscular develcpment as well as-color and vi. tality of the bleed than those reared in the valley or even coast counties. : With this brief statement of~ facts; hewever, let it be understood that we do not claim for Nevada county that it is a paradise on earth, nor even the popular romance of sub-tropical glories. SE = s Nevada county lies a little north of the central line of California, and contains a population of about 25,000. It extends from the summit of the Sierra Nevada mountains, on the east line of the State, westward a distance of seventy miles to the Sacramento Valley. It is from twelve to twenty miles wide, The altitude is from two to three thousand feet along its central portion and less than one thousand feet-elevation in the western or valley region. The line of the Central Pacific Railroad crosses the-eastern boundary, and travsrses. the southern portien of the county. for many miles. It then enters Placer county, following close to the southern boundary of Nevada county till near its western limit. The Nevada County Narrow Guage Railroad connecta with the Central Pacific at Colfax and extends thence north to the central portion of the county, passing through Chicago Park, Grass Valley, and terminating at Nevada City—twenty-two miles from the Central Pacific Overland Railroad. ‘The central pertions contain most of the rich gold mines, including quartz, hydraulic and placer mines together with the upper por_ tion of the Horticultural belt, while the western or foothill region consists exclusively of agricultural and grazing lands. The horticultural and agricultural section of the county comprises about 250,000 acres of land, a large per centage of which is adapted to cultivation. The topography of the county is such ‘as to give variety to the products. We grow successfully in Nevada county: Oranges, citrone, figs, olives, Bartlett pears, apples, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, s.rawberries, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries, hazel nuts, black walnuts, chestnuts, almonds, every kind of vegetable grown. Nevada City is the county seat of Nevada county. There are five daily, one tri_ weekly and three weekly newspapers pub— lished in the county. : The fellowing named towns are in Nevada county: Nevada City, Grass Valley, Truckee, Beca, Rough and Ready, Spenceville, Indian Springs, North San Juan, Birchville, Sweetland, Cherokee, French Corral, Columbia Hill, Lake City, Malakoff, Nerth Bloomfield, Derbec, Moore’s Flat, Orleans Flat, Graniteville, Ormonde, Washington, Alpha, Omega, Bear Valley, You Bet, Quaker Hill, Hunt’s Hill, Red Dog, Little York, Chicago Park, Buena Vista, Blue Tent, Mooney Flat, Boston Ravine, Allison Ranch, Forest Springs, Patterson, Maybert. lemons, and +0@e5Girl Wanted To do housework in a simall family. quire at the Transcript office, Eoal-u : ~ + ee + Hires’ Root Beer. Going camping is not such a. glorious thing as some people imagine, especially when the campers start out in a vehicle which is a relic from Noah’s Ark. Rake the town with a fine-tooth cemb for young men who have great push, and such young fellows as Ralph Webber, Marion Walling aud-the balance of the party that left here for Bowman’s Dam a few days ago, would be scooped in. But their push is all out of them now: After proceeding about fourteen miles a hot-bex on one of the wheels stopped them, and after a good deal of sweating work they succeeded in getting things in condition to move on. They moved ou at such a rapid rate that they made the town of Graniteville, fourteen miles further on, in two days. When they arrived there they would not haye cared a pinch of snuff if. they could have entered the town in some kind of style. The style in which they were compelled to make their grand. entry there was with a dilap dated wagon with twe wheels frozen to the axle, while the other wheels bore the resemblance of two men with sore throats, the, boxes being covered-with yarn, as they could not find any cord to do. the. -necessary-binding. They finally got their véhicle running again, and left Graniteville with a good supply of axle grease and a new lantern, having lost the one they took from home. The boys are having a great time. ‘Mrs. T. S. Democrat: The Charioteer Band of the Salvation Army is comprised of eleven warriors in the cause, who have an ear for music. There are five captains, two lieutenants and four privates, At present they are on the war path and will bear down on Marysville next Saturday to remain four days. This sending of a umform band threughout the country is another of the many advertising schemes that originates in the army. They travel from place to place, lead meetings and street parades of the army and never fail to attract the attention of the element with whom they are working to do good. , The Charioteer Band idea is a theft of a patent medicine company in the East, but the salvationists believe in turning all worldly ideas to spiritual ends, on the same principle in which they sing ‘‘Glery toGod -in the Highest” to the air of ‘A New Coon in Town.’ Undoubtedly their visit to this city will add to many people’s evening entertainment. He says: “I was feeling sick and tired and my stomach seemed all out of order. T tried a number of remedies, but none seemed to give me relief until I was induced to try the old reliable Ayer's Pills. I have taken only one box, but I feel like a new man. I think they are the most-pleasant and easy to take of. anything I ever used, being so finely sugar-coated that even a child will take them. I urge upon all who are in Needof a laxative to try Ayer’s Pills,”"— Boothbay (Me.), Register. ‘Between the ages of five and fifteen, I was troubled with a kind of saltrheum, or eruption, chiefly confined to the legs, and especially to the bend of the knee aboye thecalf. Here, running sores formed which would scab over, but-would break immediately on moving the leg. My mother tried -eyerything she could think of, but all fwas without avail. Although a child, I read in the papers abont the beneficial effects of Ayer’s Pills, and persuaded my moth. er to let me try them. With no great faith in the result, she procured Ayer's Pills and I began to use them, and soon~ noticed an improvement. Encouraged by this, I kept on till I took two boxes, when the sores disappeared ahd have never troubled me since.”—H.
