“Rip Van Winkle” as Played Last Night—
Tonight’s Attraction.
Washington Irving’s legendary idyl of
“Rip Van Winkle” never had a better
Presentation at this city than the HatchTrader company gave it last evening.
Mr. Hatch’s rendition of the lines of the
part made immortal by the masterful
geniugef Joe Jefferson was such that it
did not suffer materially in any respect
when compared with the latter’s work;
and his powerful and finished personation
had the very best of suppoct from the
company which is one of the most satisfactory seen here in years. It is made
up of ladies and gentlemen having good
standing with metropolitan critics iu their
respective lines,
Tonight the sparkling French comedy
of “‘My Mother-in-law,” with Mr. Trader
in the leading part of ‘Leon Bonnefoi,”
will be the. attraction, and it will bea
strong one. It is a play of decided spiciness, although ptrfectly clean and wholesome in tone, and the company appear
in it to the greatest advantage,
The trcupe merits in every way the
patronage of all people who appreciate
tinished and ientious dramatic performances,

Be Would Bea Californian.
Chicago Park guardian of Uncle Sam’s
mail, tells about the best story we have
heard in a longtime. A few days ago
Mr. Briot received a letter from an Eastera man asking for information regardhad $8,000 cash and desired to come to
California for the benefit of his health
and also to make this State his home.
The letter was written on the cheapest
kind of paper and was inserted in an
open envelope, upon which there was a
one cent stamp, the same as a cireular,
Inside the letter was another one cent
stamp, and a request that Mr. Briot
make reply. We are of the opinion that
had we been in Mr. Briot’s place we
would have written the reply on the back
of the postage stamp and then put it on
aa envelope addressed to the writer, and
our reply would have been, ‘‘Stay at
home.” :
