some trees across the road and the
hauling of the rig was interrupted til!
the obstructions could be removed.
When the machinery starts it will
take about five days to pump out: the
water and then the main drift will be
pushed ahead speedily, while at the
same time the breasting out of grave
will begin, The drift isin 400 fuet

supposed to Be about 1,000 feet wide.
At a point eighty feet from the shaf
the rim-rock and light wash. gravel
carrying fine gold were encountered.
This formation continues for a dis
tance of 120 feet, and then the simonpure blue gravel which makes the
water used in washing it look like indigo isencountered and extends the
remaining 200 feet ofthe drift with
bedrock ‘still pitching. ‘The blue
> gravel carries coarse gold, and many
nuggets worth from one to three dollars have been found by panning.
Every pound of the gravel showe
gold, Atiy tenderfoot can take a panful from any point ‘and get at leas
twenty colors, One pan _ yielded
eleven: dollars worth of the royal metal. Old gravel minerssay they have
never seen anything that promises

Although Hood’s Sarsaparilla is now
claimed to be a positive specific for

Burial at Sacramente.
Tom Henry, old and broken down
was a dashing young chap—the leader
of the ‘‘biled shirt’’ contingent and the
admiration of the fair sex who
tofore stated in the TRANSORIPT, @ son
of “Sandy” Anderson recently wrote
to Hon. W. D. Long from Woodstock,
Virginia, inquiring as to where his
vather was buried if at all when he lost
his life by the explosion of the steamer
Pearl which occurred on the Sicramento river in the winter of 1855, and it
was aleo remarked by this. paper-in.
speuking of the letter that Tom Henry,
one of the long-time hourders at’ the
county hospital, could probably give
all the information desired. Wednesday morning the reporter saw Tom
“*Yes,’’ said he, ‘I remember all about
it, I was in Sacramento with ‘Governor’ W. H. Endicott, then Sheriff of
this county, taking in the legislature.

something hud happened across the
river and. wanting t@ Gndout what it
was I didnot hesitate. As we cleared the shipping anchored by the levee
and were pulling along ata lively rate
I discovered floating down the current
the body of a man. The seco:d glance
showed me the long silvery beard
and the unmietakable features of
‘Sandy’ Anderson. I arose to jump
into the water after it. ‘Sit down, there,
you youngster,’ said one of the men
with emphasis grabbing my coat-tail
and pulling me down as he spoke, .I
hurriedly explained to them who and
what the body was. We got it aboard
an‘! took it ashore, when it was removed to the station-house. I ran up
town to tell Endicott and Holmes, By
order of Holmes, who had lived here
and knew Anderson well, I got an express wagon and removed the body to
his house. We then telegraphed to
Joho Anderson at this city of his
brother's fate. He got the dispatch in
the forenoon and mounting a saddlehorse reached Sacramento next morning in time’o attend the funeral which
we had made all the arrangements for.
