BARTLETT AS A MINER.
The San Francisco Weekly Rens ra, cf Cherokee, and Miss Clara Keader, of Sweetland,
publican of last Saturday says:
Mayor Bartlett has. never attempted to deny that he committed a nuisance on a respectable
residence neighborhood by renting a shanty for a Chinese washhouse, as a cover to an opium
den, which all Chinese washhouses are. He willalso not attempt to deny that when he owned an interest in a hydraulic mine
in Nevada county, he insisted on
bor, saying at a meeting of the
Board of Directors held in this
city that he went into the thing
to make money, and there was
more money to the company in
“Chinese than in white labor. It
was this suggestion that was
largely instrumental in putting
Chinese labor in the hydraulic
mites and which gave the antiminers one of their strongest
weapons.
If this accusation be true the
Transcript would like further
and fuller information. Can any
person or paper give us the name
witnesses of the truth of Mr. Bartnese labor be employed in working it? Mere general charges,
such as are made in the Republican’s article, will not answer.our
purpose, for we have no desire to
assist in the promulgation of false
or questionable statements calculated to misrepresent any gen-tleman onthe Democratic . ticket
from Governor down to constable.
But one thing is certain: If it
can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Bartlett ever
committed the offense laid at his
door by the Republican, Nevada
county -will instead of giving a majority of 500 votes against him roli
up from two to three times that
many over his political rave.%
The Chinese question js very far
from being a dead issue in this
part of the State, and a little of the
right sort of aggravation will
bring it to the front in a way that
mountebank and a con:equent
bindgeaee to it.
