mre, THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. MONDAY EVNG, FEB. 8, 1892. Se TI DONT DO ANY “CRAMMING.” What An Inlet Cresdent Has To : Say About® It . Eprron Transcerrr: For the benefit ef the parents having pupils in the grade mentioned by the Record-Union, would mento, as the Record-Union a few weeks ago that the pupils in the upper % of the com.non schools are vestigation i the pupils in the jes are books to handle, too many lessons to fatloding epee fin edie of Gar fovction: ij ie € x Precisely gett is true in Sacramento. ow the question is, ‘What are we going to do about it?” Shall we drop the matter and let it die out of mind, as we do'so many' other matters needing correction ? will not be the outcome if the. Record-Union can prevent it. We Lov gragenliage: this matter to the fore to put the ibility squarely the shoulders of the City Board of meation. We do not believe, however, that it will seek to avoid it, or that the gentlemen composing that importaat body will neglect the application of the necessary remedies. Is the same not true of our own city? The ‘‘cram system” has obtained in nearly all the graded schools throughout the State. Many of our eminent school men imagine the number of studies and the parrot-like style of the pupil shooting off from memory what he has crammed into him is an indication of mever was a graver mistake made. The teacher is hired to educate, and the pupil goes to school to be educated. Now, the idea ef ‘‘teaching” is compounded of two elements. The first consists in drawing out the mind and making it work on the object matter presented to it; the second consists in presenting the object matter to the mind in bringing within its scepe the proper materials of knowledge. The first is represented in the word education, and the second in the word instruction. ‘The text-books of the State are supposed to contain the + proper materials of knowledge for presentation to the minds of the pupils. Now, instead of ‘‘cramming” and overtaxing the memory by committing and .reciting,.why.net. teach the pupil to *‘ think,” draw out the mind and develop its dormant faculties? When he grasps the idea conveyed by the instructor he will think for himself and express his thoughts clothed in his own language, which is more beneficial to him than committing and reciting six pages of the text-book, which he perhaps cannet understand nor give an explanation of. Now, since this question’ has been brought before the public, it is to be sincerely hoped that every newspaper in the State will give it ventilation according to its merits. If this is an anomaly existing in our high schools, it should be rectified as sogn as possible, A TeacueEr, rrr JA Ladder Fer Mines. Melville Attwood, the well known mining engineer and ex-resid’nt of Grass Valley, now of San Francisco, has invented a chain ladder for use in mining abAfte to take the place of the wooden ladders in ordinary use. The sides of the new ladders are iron chains of threewighths iron, and the rounds are half-inch gs pipe fourteen inches leng fastened firmly in place. The ladder is fastened at intervals to the sides of the shaft, so that it is quite firm. In blasting, the lewer end can be removed so that there is no destruction from flying rock. The ladders come in lengths of fifty feet and the price is forty cents per foot. REE In vain the eyes are filled with light: . SEE GHOSTS-THEN THERE MUST BE GHOSTS. Examples to Prove That Dogs Have Been Frightened in Houses in Which Spirite Were Said to Mave Appeared. . Question of Animal imraortality. . Some time ago . had something tojsay-+on animal immortality. In that article l briefly referred to the argument, now not uncommon, that some animals appear to haveintercourse with beings, or forms and states of being, unseen by ub. This on the face of it is not improbable; but it may be a stretch of our own imagination to assume that this is a vision of ghosts. Butifitcan be shown first that, as Wallace affirms, objective phantasmis appear to men sometines, and to dogs sometimes, then it would be hardly fair to assume that men are to havea spirit life hereafter and the dog not. It might become necessary for us to shove back our dividing line between immortals and ‘nonimymortals, and take over on our side at least some of the beasts. Is the Indian right who, in Pope's language, believes “his faithful dog will bear him company” in the-epirit. land? There seems, however, to be’ a conviction in the minds of some observers that dogs not only sometimes, but-aé-all times, see and hear what we do not hear. : First of all, in justice, let us get the facts, or the averred facts. In Rod and Gun appears the following letter: ‘Sir, ‘there is reason to believe that: animals can see spirits. At any rate, I havea very remarkable fact to relate. There isin Devonshire a large, rambling old house, which has long had the reputation. of being haunted. © Family after family tried to make it their home. One after another they gave it up, all for the same reason that ‘was fréquent spectral ongoings in one of the corridors. Sometimes the ghost was seen by one member of the household, while it was invisible to others close by,” which, of course, would indicate that the seeing, or not seeing. depended on the ocular condition of the family. At least, a skeptic would strongly urge that the probabilities were in favor of visual delusion. “Sometimes mysterious sounds showed the ghost to be about, while he was not yisible to any of the watchers.” A SCARED DOG. Hearing easily follows hysterical seeing. . have myself seen wires.and lamps when . knew note existed. ‘The family that last occupied the house thought a fierce dog might settle the problem, on the supposition that a human trickster was at the bottom of the disturbance. On the first night of the dog’s residence the spectral rattlings were heard. The watchers took the dog to the corridor. True to the instincts of his nature he rushed to the front, barking savagely. Suddenly, when half way through the corridor, the dog stopped ind gazed upward in evident terror. dis tail dropped, and ‘then he retreated rembling. But to the human eye iothing was visible.” This story is vuthenticated ‘as coming from persons of inqnestioned veracity and excellent sowers of judgment. lf you will excuse me for turning wide from the main. thought 1 will give. me or two illustrations to show that shost seeing is not so improbable as you 1ave judged. Fanny Kemble tells: us hat when residing in “Rittenh quare her maid, sitting so that “She ‘aced and could see the staircase and ipper landing, saw the door of her bed“oom open, and an elderly woman ina iKanel dressing gown, with a bonnet on her head, come out; walk the whole length of the passage, and then return deliberately in the same manner. The maid knew her mistress was down stairs, and also was confident that no such person as she saw could be in the house. Having good nerves, the woman did not at first tell Miss Kemble what she had seen, but ransacked the-roomsto see if she could solve the puzzle, all the time afraid ‘her mistress would be disturbed by some similar apparition. ’ She afterward came on a portrait in the houge suddenly that was an exact copy of her ghost. A good chance, of course; for an imaginative maid, or a cunning one, to work up a fine yarn. Yetit is somet that Miss Kemble believed the girl did see an apparition. STRANGE CASES, The Epworth parsonage case, involying John Wesley, is of great value because it links both man and beast in the sensing of apparitions. Mr. Wesley says: ‘Soon after our large mastiff dog came and ran to shelter between us. While the disturbances continued he used to bark and leap and snap on one side and the other, and that frequently before any person in the room heard any noise at all. But after two or three days he used to tremble and creep away before the noise began. And by this the family knew it was at hand; nor did the observation ever fail.” The testimony here is certainly credible merely as honest asseveration, but we are free to judge whether it was some electric or magnetic phenomenon that the dog felt or was ghostly presence, A very strange case is reported by Mr. Hodgson in September, 1890, in which a white lady appeared. ‘The third night the haunted man’s dog crouched and stared, and then acted-asif driven around the room. Brother saw nothing,. but heard a kind of rustle, and then the poor dog howled and tried to hide, and never again would that dog go-to that room.” Robert Dale Owen reports a ‘case’ of a haunted man who had not been able for years to keepadog. I confess these cases all seem different when looked at with Bome knowledge of dog nature. [am sure that a scared man would scare a dog out of his wits.—St. Louis Globe Democrat. oe Horseflesh as Food. Horseflesh is used for human food in Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland, and also in several parts of Italy. It is not considered fit for human food in Bucharest, Scotland or England. Atemnte were made in 1868, 1875 and 1878 to introduce it into London, but they were not successful.—Philadelphia Ledger. How She Described Hor Dresses. A young lady, en route for the seaside, sent her box on by “goods,” and on the consignment note she prepared . actually condescended ‘to describe her wearing ‘apparel as ‘‘one box of rags,” the charge for which would, of course, be much less than if the goods were correctly described.—London Tit-Bits, '~ A Girl's Ldea. 3 ‘Rosalie has adopted ‘a plan that makes all the girls awfuliy jealous,” “Whatisthat” = .-. “Why, she has taken all her engagement rings and had them made into # 2 Aenea CEERI ee wee Fs . Some time ago I bought two bottles of Joy’s Vege table Sarsaparilla and have only had one attack since and that was on the second day after I began using it.” JOY Ssorscperne FOR SALE BY {ARR BROTHERS.
