If the remainder is the same as the figure placed at the right of the product the multiplication has-been performed correctly. To illustrate: 862 16 ee 5172 18792 = In this example the remainder of excess obtained by dividing the sum of the several: digita of 862, the upper number by-9, is found to be’ 7. The excess inthe multiplier is likewise fownd to be7, and that in the product 4, which latter is found to corresthe product ef the numbers at the right ofthe two factors in this multiplication. The usual: way of—e:tablishing the correctness of a computation of this kind is to go through with the operation @ second time. That, however, takes longer than to prove the work as suggested, besides being Open to the objection that if an error has been committed in the firat-caleulation, one is liable to make the same mistake in the second. The methed here presented will be found very simple in its application, although the reason of the thing may not at ence be apparent. The several remainders can be readily ascertained by adding and dropping 9 whenever the sum equals er exceeds that amount. Drop 9 and add 2°to the next digit, muking 11; drop 9 and add 2 to the next, making 4, the remainder required. This method of proof is called ‘‘casting out the nines.”.
