The Citrus Fair at the Mechanics Pavilion, San Francisco, will unquestionably
be the grandest ever seen on the coast.
The lower floor of the exhibition has been
arranged tegive the best effect with a
west view. The great triple arch of
Placer county in the citrus display stands
in front of the main entrance. The central arch will be on the line of the main
-aisle, and through it the promenaders will
walktoan inspection of the citrus exhibit, The Placer county folk call theirs
the Gateway, County, hence their position in the fair. The: 'ageh will reach

It will be covered with oranges and lemons, interspersed with electric lights.

With Some of the Leading Clizeas of te
City of Marysville.
an Appeal reporter asked a number of
Marysville prominent citizens what legis‘lation they thought was particularly
needed for this-part of the State. The
‘majority of the had not given the matter any thought and others were of the
Mayor Rideout happened to be the first
pagpoken te and he said:
“I do not think just now of any legislation that is necded particularly by this
section of the State.
“As to measures of géneral interest, a
constitutional amendment repealing the
tax on mortgages is much needed. This
provision of the new constitution was, of
course, intended to aid the borrower by
compelling the party making a loan secured by a mortgage on real estate to pay
the taxes on the amount of the loan, that
amount being deducted from the asuetsment of the property securing the loan.
“The mortgage tax has so far failed of
its purpose that it has not only made it
more difficult fur the borrower to obtain a
loan on his land, but has actually, to some
extent, meréased the rate of interest by
‘turning to other States ties capital
. Col. Edwards Woodraff, in ‘aipwer to
what legislation is needed: for this part of
Yuba county, replied:
“The waters of the Yuba river are now.
flowing down surcharged with mountain
mud, so thick that you can almost cut it
with a knife, and that no faith can possi
bly be given to the honesty of hydraulic
mining or of hydraulic mining promises,
and that therefore the existence of the
navigable rivers and the great Sacramento
Valley is not possible with the continued
existence of hydraulic mining in any form
or shape. The‘ latter has been tried in
every way and fdrm of rehabilitation and
has proven the deadly enemy and déstroyer of our rivers and valleys. It cannot
be otherwise. The legislation needed in
this instance is a punitive clause in our

A Nugget Found Near Wheatland.
W. P. Lipp, of Wheatland, while pros
pecting at Nugget ravine, seven miles
east of Wheatland, on Frank Hunt’:
land, found a large gold nugget whic!

A grains. It is valued at $246. Grundy
claim about two years ago found another
large nugget for which he received #226.
The oue found by Mr. Lipp is the largest
nugget ever broughtto Wheatland from
