Spokane Falls special says that a mys

night, Peter M. Johnson, a Dane, ac:
companied by two countrymen, were
on their way to their cabin. Johnson’s companions, who were walking
one on each side of him, were suddenly startled by hearing a shot fired. At
the same instant Johnson fell with a
bullet hole in his forehead. — Death
was instantaneous, Twomen were
seen to run off inthe darkness as the
shot was fired. The officers were at
once notified of the crime, but can
obtain no clue to the perpetrators.

There is not an idle man in this vicinity—that is, among those seeking
work,
The sale of the Chipps quariz mine
at this place to San Francisco parties
has been completed by the payment of
the purchase price, sixteen thousand
dollars, over to John Henderson, who
‘. Was owner of the property. The Chips
is. regarded here by those who have
had opportunities for knowing as being agood mine. The ten:stanip mill
is to start up in a few days.
Everything 1s bustie and activity at
the Mountain mine, Down on the
bank of the North Yuba river, where
the grading for the forty stamp mill is,
about completed, the big boarding
house is-well under headway and will
soon ‘be ready to occupy. A large
force of men have been put on the road
and flume and the contractors propose to push it through in the time allotted to them. The contractto build
the wire-rope tramway, has been let to
the Trenton, New Jersey, Iron Co.
Parties will arrive here before long to
inaugurate that work.
Sixteen men are employed up at the
mine and everything is being put in
shape for such time as the mill is
ready te start up, which it’ is expected
will be during the month October.

A late issue of the News Letter contained an articlein attempted derogation of the Mountain Mine enterprise,
at Sierra City. Among other things it
is alleged that the rock has not been
properly tested, and that the property
had twice-beenabandoned. Neither
of the allegations are trae. Tha same
writer advises that a few thousand
tons be worked at the Young America
mine in which, it says, are many idle
stamps, Thisis untrue, every stainp
in that mil) being busy. The cause of
Hthe article is not difficult to guess, and
it is probably a refusal on the part of
the managers of the mine to be blackmailed, /

The Bald Mountain Extension tunnel, near Downieville, is in nearly
4,400 feet, and for some time pagt the
rock has been soft enough to pick, and
no ting was required. The miners
there are now certain that the long lost
channel must be near, and an upruise
will soon be made, unless the lead is
found ahead, There wasa rather disastrous cave in ths Wide Awake drift
mine, near Downieville the other
night, and about fifteen days will be
required to put the tunnel in good
working order, This property is under
a thirty days bond to San Francisco
capitalists for $55,000.

Married At Cherekee,
About 200 people, including twenty
from this city, attended the wedding
of Hugh McCauley, Jr., and Miss
Delia Carey, which took place at 5:30
o’clock Sunday afternoon at the home
in Cherokee of the yourg lady’s parents. After the wedding a fine supper
was served. The festivities lasted till
about ten o’clock in theevening. The
young couple have a large number of
friendsia the county. They will make
their futara home on Coyote street in
this city.

which the militiamen marched, the
music of thé go-around and the clanging of the Church bells all joined in
disturbing the ambient air.

topof Banner mountain Monday morning—Prof. Straight and his class with
sketching matarials, Rev. Angwin and
family and Mr. and Mra. Merritt and
guests. Prof. Straight sketched in
colors under the noonday. light.
There is a movement on foot to establish a Chatauqua Assembly at Lake
Tahoe similar to the one at Monterey
where those who wish may come and
spend the summer, ‘The place selected
is near Glenbrook. The first Assembly will beheld on August 11th and
