Pa — THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. . wanreo FOR THE WORLD'S FAIR. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. WN L. 8. CALKINS, XN. P. BROWN, EDITOR: BUSINESS MANAGER. FRIDAY EVENING, JULY 10, 1891. A [BAD BOAD, Nevada County Is Asked to Put It In Passable Condition. Senator Preston has reeeived from D. W. Lubeck of Auburn, Vice President of the Placer County Bank, 4 letter im which that gentleman says: ‘Permit me on behalf of a number of our citizens to ask you to appear before your County Supervisors and urge them to repair the Nevadacounty wagon Tread} feature of the World's fair. As might from Summit Station on the C. P. R. R. to Donner Lake, a distance of two or three miles. «<We are aware that the road is not very extensively traveled, that it is in use buta part of the year and that itisan expensive road to keep in repair,. Two or three good men could put it-in reason— able condition at a comparatively slight cost. “The magnificent scenery. andthe }grandeur of the surroundings which one beholds in crossing the Sierra Nevadas is very much marred by the almost impassable roads. Asthis one is now a person passing over it is in danger of being maimed for life or having his vehicle \ed.” Mr. Preston will present the matter The Pestife rous Grasshopper. N. G. Segestrand, thie manager of Pet Hill Fruit Farm, was in town today. He says the grasshoppers have played havoc around Indian Springs and. other places from that altitude down, . although a few f° of them came as far up as Penn Valley. At Smartsville people who have but small orchards have protected their trees by enclosing them with sacks, mosquito netting, etc., but in the ‘big orchards, such as those on the Pet Hill, Excelsior and Driesbach farms, such arrangements are not expedient. Mr. Segestrand has found _____spraying with a solution containing a : genic and sulphur-smoking rather @flica~ cious, but he thinks the present rainstora: will do more .tewards suppressing the Fourth of July Finances. “Tidings: The itemized reports of the . various Fourth of July committees at Grass Valley show that $911 were col~Yected “and that the expenditures~‘werc about $950, leaving a deficit of $40. The committee has some property on hand, including a_.well-made canvas awning comprising 522 square yards which -cosi about $100. As many of our business men were very much benefited financially by the celebration, it is hoped they will voluntarily ‘‘step up to the Captain’: office’ and by small contributions make up the deficiency. If this is not done the canvas -will be sold at auction or private sale to the highest bidder.. interested themselves in a project to buy the Colosseum of Rome, remove it to to the Board-at-an-early-date-_____ struct a Chicago Capitalists. Certain enterprising Chicagoans have Jackson park and make it an immense be expected, this astounding project has set the tongues of ruin worshipers wagging vigorously. Some antiquarians declare that it would be an artistic, moral and political outrage to disturb this glorious relic of ancient Rome. Signor Barsotti, editor of The Progresso ItaloAmericano, is opposed to the enterprise on patriotic and sentimental grounds. To indicate that the idea is preposterous he cites Byron's lines: When fallcithe Colosseum, Rome shall fall, And when Rome falle—the world. But the Chicago men seem very much i They have estimated the cost of procuring the Colosseum and reerecting it on the shores of Lake Michigan at $40,000,000, a. large portion of which would go to the Italian government for the building. It is also proposed to consufficient strip of land can be obtained for the purpose. Just. think,” said Dr. John Aitken, the originator of the scheme, *‘of the advantage to every one who visits the fair of seeing those two peerless monuments of antiquity, the Appian Way and the losseum—storied relics of the past, the contemplation of which és a liberal edu cation. So greatly, indeed, have the edu cational possibilities of our plan im pressed themselves on some well know1 philanthropists that they have taker stock in our company for that caus alone—Colonel Shepard and the Rev Dr. Mallory, of New York, and the Rev. Dr. Talmage. They understand what s Chicago. _. Should the enterprise be carried out— and there are no engineering difficulties ir the way of its consnmmation—races anc festivals, modeled after those of ancient Romeé, will be held “in the building, and Buffalo Bill will be invited to hold fi’ Wild West show therein. Bick-headaches are the outward indications of derangements of the stomach and bowels. As Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaparilia is the only power for good the Colosseum will be in .
