Judge Searls Tolls a Story of Crossing the
Plaing,
The annual election of the Society of
California Pioneers was held last Friday
in San Francisco. Judge Niles Searls
was elected one of the Vive Presidents.
A banquet was afterward held, presided over by the new President, C.°V:
8. Gibbs. A number of excellent speeches
were made after the winecup had circulated freely and the details of. the elec—
tien were officially announced,
Ex-President Farwell in a taking
speech proposed the toast of the ‘old
fulks at home.” Ex-Chief Justice Niles
Searls told the story of the evening and.
‘explained how he had come to be judge.
He had crossed the plains to California
in 1849 in a pasture train of young fellows, each of whom had brought. amPressed for transport aécommodation
they decided to pile up their spare powder—amounting to one and a half tons,
according to the judge—and leave it behind. In an evil. moment he had conaented to the proposition of one Fred
~~ Birch to fire the powder secretly, Asa
result their mules stampeded ‘and an indignation meeting was held, of which
Searls, the culprit, was unanimously
elected chairman. :
An informal court was appointed by
the meeting, Mr. Searls to be judge, and
he appointed his able confederate, Birch,
associate justice..The result of such.an . .
impartial ,inquiry‘‘and,”
Judge, with a twinkle, ‘‘it was quite in
accordance with the evidence presented”
perpetrated by fellow-emigrants, but~on
general principles it was not politic to
pursue the investigation any further.
‘Phe-decisionwas received with ap:
plause,” concluded the Judge, ‘‘and
since then I have always somehow been
a Judge.” ;
: o In a serious .vein he then exhorted
the work of their noble sires,
it never failed to cure dyspepsia and

Arrived Last Evening.
George Bodewig, the gentleman who
recently entered into partuership with
J. A. Northway in the management of
the Union Hotel, arrived here fiem San

past Mr, Bedewig has been one of the
leading artists in San Francisco, his studio being in the Floed building. Owing
to failing health he was obliged to give
up painting and resolved to try the
mountain air, He is very highly spoken

The Eagle Bird.
The Eagle Bird mine at Washingten
is said to be looking better than it has
fer along time. On the 600 level the
ledge is fourteen feet wide and the rock
that comes from it payswell. The ledge
on the 400 level is looking better and
the outlook at the mine is very bright.
We understand a syndicate has been
formed for the purpose of buying and
working some of the undeveloped mines
in Washington district and that they
will soon be ready te begin operations.
The prospects are geod for presperous
times in that section in the near future.

illustration of the necessity of an increase
in the circulating medium of this country,
The sentiment of such men throughout
the United States now strongly favors
the early resumption of werk in our hydraulic gold mines. On Friday, this
week, the Executive Committee of the
California Miners’ Association will meet
at its headquarters at the Bay and will
adopt measures to secure the needed relief from Congress,:which will hold an
extra session early next month. This,
will'be one of the most imporant meetings ever held in California.
The Report has already-shown how the
San Francisco Chamber of Commerce,
San Francisco Board of Trade and other
great “commercial bodies approve the
early resumption of hydraulic gold min»
iug. It has also printed the strong approvals of leading banking men, such as
Thomas Brown, Cashier of the Bank of

Going to Meadow Lake.
Mr. Maxwell, who arrived here a
short time ago to look at our mines, will
go to Meadow Lake soon to examine the
famous Excelsior mine, wich property
belengs to Mrs. H. H. Hartley. If sat.
isfied with the prospects he will arrange
to work the mine, The Excelsior is regarded as the richest mine in the district.
In years past ‘‘Old Man” Hartley teok
out considerable gold frem this ledge.
{t is claimed that the rebellious ere can
be successfully worked by some of the
recent processes, thus overcoming the
difficulty that has hitherto been encountered in the treatment of Meadow Lake
ores. Mr. Maxwell will investigate,
will Meet Tovight.
The committee appointed at the citizens meeting Saturday night will meet
at the Court House this evening, at &
o’clock sharp, for the pupose of submitting their report. If sufficient subscriptions have been received the committee
will proceed to offer a reward ; if not it
will be deferred until a suitable amcunt
is raised. It is thought that when the
rewards are all offered they will amount
te between $3,000 and $4,000.Completed His Werk.
County Assesser Clarke has finished

up and the satisfactory ‘showing of the
assessment roll. :
Filed His Bond.
David F. Douglass has filed his official
bond as Sheriff of Nevada county. The
amount of the bond is $60,000, and no
better sureties were ever on a bond in
Nevada county. In evidence of Mr
Douglass’ popularity it might be stated
that not a person who was asked refused
