Mr. Blount says he can not see what benefit aunexation will be to the United States, with the exception of a place for a coaling station. He says the majority of the inhabitants. of the Islands are not such persons as we would want for ciiizens. Moreover we could not under our form of government make colonial laws if annexati n was desirable to-enable the planters of the Islands to handle contract labor, without which sugar raising would be unprofitable. Cheap contract labor is essential to successful cultivation in the Islands. In regard to the report that Claus Spreckels asked protection at his hands he said : “J have heard that members of the Annexation Club have threatened the life of the ex-Queen, and also that. of Mr. Spreckles, god that if I did not keep quiet I would be silenced. I had no fear of their threats and continued to do my duty as I understood it. Mr. Spreckels came to me the day after the sku'] and cross bones had been nailed to his gate, surmounted by the warning of ‘Gold and silver cannot stop lead,’ and told me what had happened. He did not appeal to me for protection, but on the contrary to after I had ivgh the protection necessary.” “Is the report true that the Provisional Government paid the demand of Mr. Spreck.els tor $95,000 which he had loaned.the Queen within six hours thereafter r’ **J am informed that Mr. Spreckels received the money demanded and that the sum was raised’ by-giving security of Goverpment lands within a few days demanded of the Provisioval.Government by him.” Minister Blount would not commit bimself as to whether he would urge a protectorate or not, but added that the facts would be made public in his report.
