T00 MUCH MORPHINE.
: A Stranger Found Upon the Stroot in an
+ Unconscious Condition,
At 4 o’clock this morning nightwatchman Seott found a man lying upon the
platform in front of Jaines Cairns’ harness. shop, Broad street. He was in a
stupetied condition and the officer soon
saw that his stupor was not caused by
drinking. Offivers Scott and Carr removed the unfortunate fellow to the
City Hall, where he was scon after seen
by Dr. Tickell, who pronounced it a cave
of narcotism, caused. by an overdo 6 of
morphine, “which indications plainly
showed the victim had administered in
the form of hypoder . ic injections. The
usual restorative treatment was given,
bat the poisonous drug had so prostrated
his nervous system that the remedies had
no perceptible effect. At 8 o'clock he
was still in about the same condition
__and theattending physician thought. his
recovery very doubtful. ‘
The man 1s a ‘stranger here, having
arrived several days ago. He isa young
man, a painter by trade, and claimed tw }be from New York.” Last week he
worked a day and a. half at Forman's
paint shop. Forman n@ feed that he
‘acted rather queerly. He stopped at Conlin’s City Hotel a few days, and the
proprietor observed that he was reatless
and uneasy. The man is a morphine
fiend, and like many other pc or, misera~
ble creatures, he has reached that stage
nnatural craving of his shattered syatem.
Since the above was in type we learn
i Yet nothing but the drug satisfies the
' that the man’s name is Fred Goodwin
and that he was formerly & reporter ou.
“one of the San Francisco papers. He
has been taken to the County Hospital.
His brother, Billy Goodwin; ¢ime up
frvm Grass Valley today to see him.

The opéning gun for the speedy resumption of hydranlic gold mining in
this State, which the Daily Report fired,
when the financial panic was at its worst,
aroused the whole country. This comparatively easy means of adding from
$10,000,000 to. $15,000,000 in go!d to the
circulating medium of the United states,
and thus relieving the money market,
and stimulating business of all kinds, especially on this coast, continues. to meet
with strong approval, ‘The Report is
receiving m ny sommunications from influential peop.e, who endorse its position,
and they will be pubhshed as fast as the
pressure of other news upon its columns
will permit.
A meeting of the Executive Committee of the California State Miners . Asso
ciation will be held at the Bay immediately after the F. urth of July, at which
the most energetic measures will be
adopted to take advantage of the extra
session of Congress, which has been call:
ed for August 7th, to have all the red
tape which now prevents the lawful resumption of hydraulic mining resumed,
and to have a larger appropriation made
by. the Government. Never have the
hydraulic Miners had a more propitious
time to Carry their point than, this,— It
will be suicidal if they do not bestir
themselves and work hard night aud
day to accomplish what wall bring yreat
prosperity to themselves, the state cf
California and the entire nation.
SENATOR FORD'S Views,
Tn response tc a request for his views
by a D. R. reporter Senator Trey 1.
Ford of Sierra county, author of the
Ford mining bill,. who is at present in
the city said:
“The-Report, has had the sagacity te
ascertain, and the wisdom to suggest,
the only practical remedy for the present
stringency in the money market. Up
in the Sierras is a fund of several hundred millions of gold that ought now to
be in circulation, Let that fund be
drawn upon ‘through the medium of the
hydraulic miner, and the financial questions now agitating the country will tind
@ teady and natural. solution. I notice
$ atthe baukers and business men of}
San—trancisco-are keenly “alive tothe’
powerful aid the gold {roi the hydraulic
mines would be to them at this time.
Cfhomas Brown, caster of tlie Bauk of
California, aptly stated the entire case
in his recent communicat‘on to your paper, and showed the absolute necessity
for the gold now locked up in the mountains, 3 eee :
“Not only would the release of this
gold relieve the present stress in the
money market,” continued the Senator,
“but it will have a quickening effect upon all of California’s industries. With
ten millions of gold annually added to
California’s natural productions, we
would havea balance wheel that would
prevent any serious shocks to our com
mercial machinery. More than this, it
would repopulate a large section of car
State, create an increased demaiid for the
products of the farm and factory, and
stimulate commercial life throfghout
the State. ‘To give you some idea of the
loss already sutiered by the ~tate, I need
but tell you that in one county in my
district the assessment roll has fallen off
tive millions since the steppage uf hydraulic mining; and this, too, notwithstanding the county has advanced quite
rapidly in fruit and other industries. I
refer to Nevada county, which is only
one out of many counties similarly situated,
“Yes,” said the Senator, in conclusion, “the Report has suggested a plain,
practical, businesslike remedy for the
financial ills that seem to be disturbing
the country, and it deserves the thanks
not only of the miners of California, but
of the entire commercial world,”.

The Slayer of Sheriff Pusooe Is Stil Being
Hunted.
As yet no definite trace has been-found
of the murderer of Sheriff Pascve. Dispatches describing the guilty party have
been sent in ull. directions and_ officers
everywhere are on the look out for sus
picious characters. here seems to be
not the slightes: doubt that the tramp
who shot brakeman Bruce is t.e same
individual who killed . Sheriff Pascoe,
Warden Aull sent to the Sheriff's office
a few days ago a picture of an ex convict
named Frederickson, who it is snpposed
furnished the pistols and guns to the
prisoners who attempted to.escape from
the Folsoin prison.
The officers think they have trailed
the suspect as far as Smartsville, ‘his
morning a suspicious-looking individual
made his appearance at Jones’ Par, four
miles southwest of this city, and asked
tor breakfast, which was given to him,
The man at whose house the tramp was
ted, concluded he was the murderer of
the Sheriff, so _he sent his wite to Grass
Valley-cu-horseback to notify the officers,
A posse consisting of Messrs. Shoemaker,
Richards, Gautier and others leit Grass
Valley at noon, From the description
giveu it is thought the’ inan is the right
one. The Jones’ Bar man sent word
that he'would keep the fellow in sight
until the officers arrived.
Supposing this’man to be the murderer
of Sheriff Pascve, Detective Pen True arviv ed f aturdiy, witha tramp who said he
vould recognize tue tellow whoshat brakenan Bruce. He sweéurs that the picture is
that of Krederickson,
Nightwatchmai Shoemaker saw the
tramp who shot Pascoe and gave an ac;
curate des tription of him, which, tallies’
with the pieture, which he had not seen,
this goes.to show that Frederickson is
the murderer.
In connection with this unfortunate
afuir Constable Richards is receiving the
stverest censure, Fully an hour passed
before he gave the alarm, when had the
word been given at once the fiend could
probably have Leen de ected.
Rewards aggregating $1,200 have been
offered for the capture and conviction of
the murderer, :
The business men will also ‘érganize a
club, it-insaid, wne-the—amount—wil—be

Word was received here yesterday
aiternoon that the manu who killed
Sheriff Pascoe had been arre-ted at
French ¢ orral. “ Deputy Sheriff Douglass
and Sheriff Conroy of Placer county,
Constable Richards of Grass Valley and
Constable Dyer of Colfax, immediately
started for French Corral. Upon iheir
arrival they found that the man detained
there was not the man they watited and
he was released from enstody.
Saturday an alarm of tire was sounded
at Grass Vatley. During the excitement
@ woman saw what she supposed was a
man ron under the Opera House, She
notified some one and in a short time it
was rumored tnat the man who killed
Sheriff Pascoe was hiding. under the
building mentioned, Armed men soon
surrcunded the place, and after cautiously approaching discovered tnat the
only living thing under the building was
a large hog, which had probably become
frightened and ran there for safety.
