“Ep, Transorirr: The article on mines
and mining written by L. S. Calkins,
which appeared in your issue of the 27th,
is the best document of its character

that most important question. A question which involves alike the interests of
the miner and the mechanic, the professional and business man, the farmer and

people of our County and State to the

The Truckee Mecting.
The Republican candidates were in
Truckee on Wednesday and held a meeting but did not discuss political questions
The meeting was of the character of a
memorial service, all being invited to attend and participate.
Rev. Mr. Jones, of Truckee, called the
meeting to order, and after a musical
selection by a improvised choir, opened
the meeting with prayer.
He then called on R. I, Thomas for a
few remarks. Mr. Thomas responded in
a short but eloquent and feeling address
that delighted his andience.
Mr. Bowman made the principal adIn opening Mr. Kowman said
that is was difficult for the world to
realize that the silent forces of nature are
the mightiest forces, and yet he said the
conscious, yet almost omnipotent ‘influ.
ence of woman on. man,
He referred feelingly to the early
struggles of Presidint Harrison with
peverty and adversity, and to th e
struggle which resulted in nie anole
reaching the high position which he now
decupies, From this he passed to a general application-of his subject, dwelling
upon the mighty influence, especially of
the wives and mothers of America, to
whom he paid a glowing and eloquent
tribute. :
He appealed to the women presdnt to
endeav: r to make their own lives noble
and helpfut, reminding them of the
beautitul lives of Longfellow ;
“+. ives of great mea all remind us,
Wecan nake our lives sublime,
And departing leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.”
One lady remarked at the close of the
address : ‘‘I never knew befcre what a
grand thing it is to be a woman.”
Mr. Ford, who was present and somewhat indisposed, had not intended to
speak but finally responded to a pressing
request, and delivered a feeling aud eloquent tribute to the departed, His
speech was full of eloquence and tender
ness aud made a deep’ impression.
All the candidates were present and
the crowded hall proved that the peopl
of Truckee appreciated the meeting.
