Grass Valley Union: The Salvation
Army, of this place. has one Chinese
convert, who takes his share in the
street exhoitations, but has not yet
been promoted to the command of a
drum. He is now taking lessons in
English ifi order to become more proficient inthe language. His teacher
is a young lady, and a few nights ago
one of her brothers thought he would
play » joke on the Celestial by ‘eappearhimself in a sheet, andconfronting the.
pupil.as he was on his wayhome, The
scheme did not work according: to intention, for instead of taking 6 scare},
the Chinaman tackled the ghost ex-1 :-ajabs, and their »ubj
claiming, ‘‘Meeatchee. one~debjil,,”
and proceeded te ‘pammel his ghostship in true. slogging.style. Some
companions of the ghost, Who had ‘secreted themselves to’see the fur, then'y
found it necessary. tointerfere «nd
save the joker frém further punishment. It is now understood among
those boys that ‘ghosts don’t go”’ with
Chinamen; at least those who have
enlisted as Christian warriors imthe
army of Salvation.

skins of tigérs and leopa:ds were scattered about by thehundred. They lay
in great piles on the floors. They were
hung on the walls, and some of the

went through room after room filled State and Federal. :
with such skins, and I was told that} Ofte: —Opposite the Court House
the beasts were all killed by the rajah, . —
who is yery fond of tiger-hunting, and
who is an excellent shot.
I was also shown the outside of the
palace containing the harem, and the
arrangements for keeping it cool struck
me‘as rather peculiar. Outside of the
main hall, and running along one
length of the palace, was a series of
great fanning-mills not unlike those
used by the American farmer. These
were turned by half-naked men, and:
they thus kept rumping up draughts
into the rooms beyond. ’
I visited the rajah’s stables, and
took a look at-his horses.. There was

A Stage Turned Over.
The Appeal says: On last Tuesday
evening the Marysville and Downieville stage horses ran away from Char.
Smith’s place on Stanfield hill, while
the driver was waiting to assist a lady
passenger into t':e coach. They ran
for over two miles, closely followed by
the driver, W. J. Morrow, when the
coach upset and was somewhat broken. The driver and the lady passenger came to town in an express wag“on. One of the horees was slightly
scratched, which with the breaking of
the stage, was all the damage done.
