it was impossible tor the lumbermen and

There was a level space, 300 yards or so
wide at the bottom, and then the creek.
“Now,” I said, “if that bark was only

would save me a god deal of money. As
it is, it will také a good deal of money

inches of snow during the night, and it
had been followed by one of those cold

Rev. W. 8S. Urmy has been appointed
of the hill. The old bears d to be
intent on the icy hill in front of them,
and they acted as if they were holding a
vonsultation on it. Pretty soon the big.
aest bear squatted himself on his
haunches, ‘and, inclining himself along
toward the edge of the hill, finally struck
the icy incline, and away he went down
the plain like a shot fiom a gun, and
across the level stretch at the bottom of
the hill, and clear to the bank of the
creek, When the bear came back up the
hill he ‘was the most pleased looking
creature I ever saw. He seemed .to be
tickled to death. Tobogganing had
been a delightful surprise to him. He
rejoined his family at the top of the slide,
and he danced like a dervish in his enthusiam. Then he held an earnest conflab
with his mate, and it was plain to see
thatthe was trying to induce her to make
atrial of tobboggan, but she was timid.
He at last overcame her fears, and she
squatted and tried the same sport. That
settled it. She went bick up the hill as
tickled as the old fellow had been, and
they had a gleeful breakdown together.
Phen the mother minded the bab es, and
the ald man took another turn at the
slide. Ther he went luck and took care
of the cubs until the old lady took her
turn down the slide. This thing went
on for 15 minutes, and I stayed to see
the fun. By that time I could: see that
the continuous sliding on the ice had
worn the fur all off where they sat
on the snow, andI could see by thetr acHons that these bare places were getting
a little tender. They had gotten so 'tender after a little while the two bears quit
shding. I could see that this was a great
disappointment to them, but they gave
up ard finally turned to leave the place.
As they were moving away the old man
bear’s eyes fell on my pile of bark piled
near by, he stopped a moment’ and a
great idea struck him. He grabbed one
of those pieces of bark, placed its smooth
side on the snow. , Sjuatted on the other .
side and away he went faster than he
had gone at any time before, down the
hill on a regular tobboggan. Well, maybe the sport wasn't renewed then. First
the old man bear, and then'the old woman, whiz down that slide, and of course
didn’t bother to bring their piece of bark
back, but taking a new piece from the
pile each ume. After they had tobbogganed for a good while, one at a time,
the two old bears held another family
conf*rencé, and what do you think the
result was? Why they suddenly come
to tive conclusion that it wasn’t just the
right thing-tor-them. to have all the fun to
themselves, so each bear took a cub, held
it on the bark tobbogg-n in front of
them, and gave the cubs the benefit of
the fun as well as themselves. Well, sir,
they kept that up until they had turned
every piece of bark there had been on that
hill into a tobboggan, and had no mere
toride on, and then thef went away
amiling inte the woods. I had been enjoying the sight of the tobbogganing
bears so much that I never thought of
what they were doing for ne, but after
they were gone, it suddenly came to me
that they had moved my pile of bark to
just the spot where I wanted it, and saved
me a good many fat dollare. I was a
trifle disappointed, because the bears
hadn’t piled the bark up nicely, on the
‘bank of the river, but then a man ought
not to expect every thing, ought he ?
