~ KITCHEN SOR Tee on ?-The Nugget Shopper, Nevada City, June 25, 1948 oe New Style Veterans Administration has inaugrated a comprehensive followup program designed to increase the value of hospital treatment of thousands of veterans suffering from tuberculosis and to protect . the health of their families and the public. _ More than 13,000 veterans suffering from tuberculosis now are under the care of the VA, including 1,648 in the VA Branch .12 area, which includes California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii. A total of 80,763 veterans are receiving compensation or pensions for tuberculosis. VA's follow-up program is designed to discover relapses among tubercutodis sufferers early so that further treatment may be instituted promptly. It further is designed to help prevent advanced disease and thus contribute toward the safeguarding of others through the control of communicable tuberculosis. VA’s responsibility for the care of tuberculous patients does not terminate when veteraris are discharged from hospital treatment, officials explained. Several weeks ago William Jelenick was found guilty of selling liquor to a minor, and Mrs. Lorene Stagno, was found guilty of buying liquor. Justice of the Peace Charles A. Morehouse fined, each $100. Attorney Crofford Bridges appealed to the superior court. Yesterday Judge James Snell gave his opinion. He sustained the conviction of Jelenick, but reversed the conviction of Mrs. Stagno. In the case of Jelenick, he found that the law provides a penalty for selling liquor to a person under 21 years of age. In the case of Mrs. Stagno, the judge cited a law passed in 1854, which states that when a minor female marries, she becomes an adult. As an adult Mrs. Stagno, therefore, could buy the liquor. but Jelenick . could not sell it to her, because she was under 21 years of age. they are authorized to do so beforehand by VA.
