ODE TO MUSIC.
BY THE ROAVING AMERICAN.
When the gentlest zephyrs float,
With their fond tones of love,
And sweet music's touching notes,
Attend them as they rove ;
O then, how sweet at even,
To list with thee awhile ;
Then thy mel low notes are given,
Or breathed with woman's smile.
.
Tia music's affeotive strain,
That thrills cach sensive part
And strikes love's tenderest vein,
That circles ‘round our heart.
When this life has lost its glow,
Some anthem sweetly sing,
‘When my heart is beating slow,
But gently touch the string.”
Yet if musie here eo sweet
Have rapturous moments given,
Lighter, far, the heart must beat,
With psalms as sung in Heaven.

NOT A LICK AMIS8.
The following extract from the
summary article of Bennet’s last Herald gives more hard hits than we usually sce in so small a space:
In another column we give a long
speech, received by telegraph, at a vast
expense, made by Commodore Stockten .
on floggingin the Navy. This is another Presidential speech, made for bunkum. Our Senatorial reporter showed
little tact in putting the press of New
York to such an expense for such a mass
of stuff, which every practical naval . the fathers and the scriptures in the
man redicules. The speech of Stockton
did not deserve over twenty lines. and
it cost about $200 for telegraphing alone.
Any New York lawyer would make as
good a speech for ten dollars.

the wind tearing the grey shingles off

in that house an old man and his son,
who cultivated the few acres of grourd

“The father was a self-taught man,
deeply versed in the mysteries of science, and as he could tell the name of

reading the mystic story of the starry

ignorant ever shun the gifted and enlightened. A few there wera, and
among others, the minister, the lawyer
and the physician of the place, who
showed a willingness to afford him
countenance, but they soon dropped
his acquaintance, for they found the
old man somewhat reserved and morose, and moreover their vanity was.
