Nos. lO and 12, Broad Street, Nevada, AVING JUST FINISHED A NEW HEARSE, 1} am now prepared to do Undertaking on the shortest notice. in Age. the purpose of making some repairs around the surface works, or receiving reservoir of ao old Artesia well, on thay place, That well has been dry, or, in other words, had not overfiown for several years, but when he reacbed it, he found it throwing a heavy stream of water, eight feet high—by far the tivest stream in this ection of the country, and waz informed that it bad been so flow ing for sever days But the most extraordivary feature of all is, that, upon examination, the water was found to contain, as it came from the well, large quantities of redwood sawdust, Nothing has been done about the well by which the said dust could get into it there, aod there is nota saw mill near, as far as can be learned, or any other place from which the dusi could come, within, at least, six milee of there. The sawdust comes directly up from the bowels of the earth. and the question seems to be how it got there. SreamBoat Matrers.—There seems to be as yet but little known in Sacramento concerning the arrangement between the Steam Navigation Company and the Opposition, eutered into at San Francisco. It is certaiv, bowever, that the steamer Sacramento bas been drawn off under an arrange. ment with ber owners, which will continue ia effect until the Nevada is ready to resume ber place on the river. If she is never raised, the present arrangement will be permanent, If raised, and no similar agree ment cap be bed with ber owners, then the present arrangement with the Sacramento will cease, The general basis on whieh outside boats are induced to lay up is to pay them from the receipts of the Company the same dividend on their estimated value as ie paid to stockholders of the Company. There is po transfer of ownership to the Company, but the same relative position is . occupied as to dividends. It is now generally conceded by steamboat men that the Nevada will be raisea at an early period, but she can be put in running order again only by a great outlay of money and with . considerable loss of time. shoe Valley, with about sixty bead of cows . with their young calves, which he drove in from the Kast Walker river. The Indians bad got to killing three or four head of bis cows, daily, which be considered rather too . heavy, aud consequently removed, Mr, Bense is of the impression that the Indians carry most of their stolen beef into the mountains for future use, but as yet they have not altempted to kill white residents in that exposed frontier. At the East Wal. ker District there were some thirty or forty . miners who bad four mills in operation, Mr. Bense and party brought in $500 worth of gold amalgam, the first obtained from the crushing by these mills. ‘thie amalgam ie from about twenty tons of rock, more than half the gold iu which was not saved on accoust of imperfect machinery.—[Carson Smevos Cecepration.—The target excur . sion of the Shie.ds Guard and Washington Light Infantry, which was held at Hayes’ Park on Thursday last, and concloded with a grand ball and banquet, was truly a splendid ovation, The object of marking by fitgar Orders left at the CARPENTER SHOP, foot of . ting ceremonies the general joy of our peoBroad street, opposite Withington’s, will be prompt-. ple, tbrough the recent triumphs achieved ly attended to. oct2-tf PAINT, OIL, GLASS AND WALL PAPER DEPOT. At the celebration of Washington's birthday, at the Academy of Music in New York City, the Rev, F.C, Ewer, formerly of California, delivered an address, which is highly spoken of by the city papers, A correspondent of the Bulletin gives the following synopsis of his closing remarks: There is an era in national existence dawning this day, of which though clear to us, even his prophetic mind did not dream. In the 2,000 years before Christ the world was in its first cycle of national jife. Its great nations were cities, Romo, Athens, Carthage, Jerusalem, Babylon, occupy the pages of history. Io the 2,000 now closing the world has been in the second cycle of national life. Its great nations have been States, France, Austria, Spain, England, Italy, Prussia—those, as first-class Powers, well occupy the pages of its history. But it neede no prophetic eye to see that there isopening to the world its third cycle of national life. God, in his development, never repeats himeelf—ever advances. A cycle in which its nations shall net be as the firet, cities, shall not be as the second, States, bat eball be truly great couutries, almost continental in their proportions and power, France and England, and Austria and Prussia, aud Italy and Spain, und Holland and Denmark, and Germany, occupy together a territory of 1,300,000 square miles, and possess a population of 169,000,000. The Nortbern, Middle, Southern and Western States, exclusive of the Territories of the Pacific, are occupying to-day 1,300,000 square miles, and at the ratio of increase whereunder they have grown so speedily within the lifetime of many of our silver-baired men, 3,000,000 to 30 000,000, how many decades would this country require to go on from 30,000,000 to 160,000,000, Russia, exclusive of ber Siberian possessions, occupies a territory of 2,000,000 square miles; and bow many decades will the require to increase her 60,000,000 to 120,000,000? The possibility of truly such gigantic powers—equal each of them to all the great States together of the second cycle of national life—is for the present ool to be found in two instances in the world, Russia and America, Each are but infante as yet, for the new and third cycle is but dawning. But though infants, they stand as peers of the grown men of Western Europe. And true to the pnrposes of the future in the birth of this new progeny of nations, if one of the brothers is in trouble, whether in the Crimea or at Manaseas, its twin is stirred with interest and fraternal anxiety, Kighty years is as nothing to such acountry. Thus far we have as a na. tion been struggling, not s0 much to live as to get successfully into existence. The idea of State rights, of Secession. and of small countries as first class powers, be. longs to a cycle of the world which is now closing. Sir, there isa God in Heaven, . and the great question to be decided now . aod by war is, is one of this new progency of the nations of the tature now to be successfully bora, or is it to be strangled in the birth by western EKuropesnism and the past? Rising to the dignity of her destiny in the fature, Americans will not let Wasi. ington’s America die, .
