The returns received, show a very large increase of the j uvenile population of the county over that reported last year. The total number ofchildren in the Grass Valley District. which, we believe, includes the whole township, is 1,049; the number in Nevada District is 745. The Oakland District, which in. cludes that portion of Nevada township south of Deer Creek and Gold Run, has not yet been reported. . The petition of sundry citizens of Little York . township, for a division of Chalk Bluff School District, was granted. Mr. Hollenbeck, who was elected Justice of the Peace for Little York township, having failed to qualify, W. W. Cozzens was appointed to fill the vacancy. A contract was made with Thos. L. Hughes for grading and constructing a road, commencing at the chapparal on the ridge road, and intersecting the old Nevada and Grass Valley road near the flume—the work to be completed by the first of April next, and the contractor to be paid $500. The salary of the County Auditor was fixed at $900 per annum, in addition to his fees as recorder. An yy rhe eee was made of $500, from the road fund belonging to Nevada township, for the benefit of Pine street bridge. WEAKENED.—A volunteer belonging to Capt. Atchisson’s company, who has been stopping in this place for some days past, on reading an article in the Transcript censuring the appointment of Ferris Forman tothe command of the Fourth Regiment, and stigmatizing him as a Secession sympathizer, has concluded to draw out of his engagement ; alleging in justification of his course that he is unwilling to place himself under the command of aman ofthat stripe. The course taken by our neighbor may be very patriotic, but it is certainly not calculated to promote the recruiting interest. Ifthe editor of the Transcript will take ahint from Lincoln’s reply to Fargo, he would be less liable to injure the cause he pretends 80 zealously to espouse. Mr. Ridley paid their expenses for aday or two atthe St. Louis Hotel, and arranged for their fare to Auburn.
