We received a dispatch from San Francisco this afternoon, stating that Douglas has carried the State, and that the Douglas men will have a working majority in both branches of the Legislature. The dispatch was dated at half past three o’elock, The vote of San Francisco is as follows: Lincoln 6,893 ; Douglas, 4,040; Breckinridge, 2,627. We hope this will prove true, but we shall not venture to crow untilwe are “out of the woods,”’ Monument Funp.—In many of the precincts of this coanty contribution boxes were placed elde by side with the ballot boxes, to enable voters to contribute towards the Washington Monument fund. Had some man at every voting place made it his epecial business to attend to the oontributions, we are satisfied that enough would Have been collected to entitle this county . to the marble statue of Washington; but as little attention was paid to the matter, except in afew precincts, we shall probably lose it, At Cherokee precinct, where 180 votes were polled, Mr, M. W. Martin made it his business to call the attention of voters to the contribution box, and the result was that $52 62 was collected. At Rough & Ready, where there were 209 votes, Mr. . David Bovyer attended to the matter, and $70 00 was contributed. These gentlemen . are deserving of credit for their exertions in collecting contributions, and it is to be regretted that there were not men of the eame sort at all the other precincts in the county. Tux Starx Senate.—It is stated, that of the seventeen bold-over Senators, eleven are supporters of Douglas and Johnson, If! this is the case the Douglas men will only have to elect six this year to give thema majority in that body, Watt is elected from Nevada county ; the returns received from Yuba eounty indicate the election of ©. JACKSON AND DOUGLAS. the popular vote in 1864, If California has gone for Douglas, as the returas thus far received indicate, the Democracy io after years will refer with proud satisfaction to the vote of the State in 1860. Tue Crvin War in Sonona.—A letter from Hermosillo, Mexico, gives an account of some fighting near that place, on the 9th and 10th of October, between the partisans of Gandara and Pesqueira. In the fight on the 9th, the forces of Pesqueira were commanded by Col. Morales, and were put to flight with the loss of twenty men killed, and a considerable number wounded. The Gandarists had only one or two killed and wounded, On the morning of the 10th, Gov. Pesqueira placed himself at the head of his retreating forces, determined to retrieve, if possible, the disasters of the preceding day. Rallying his men, he encountered the Gandarists, and the cenflict was renewed with bloody results, Pesqueira dasbed forward into the thickest of the fight, and standing erect in his red-top boots in the saddle and stirrups of a well caparisoned horse, his voice was heard like that of the invincible Murat, calling upon his men to rush to the rescue! But the more the Governor shouted the faster his soldiers rushed away from the enemy. Tesqueira was wounded in the thigh, and his troops made a precipitate retreat to Hermosillo. In this fight, Pesqueira lost twenty-six men, and the Gandarists five or six. The Gandarists were commanded by a son of ex Governor Gandara. “C§ountina Cuickens,’? ETC.—Among the Southern gentlemen spoken of as likely to become members of Lincoln’s Cabinet, are . Kenneth Raynor and Jobo Gilmer, of North Carolina, and T, A. R. Selson and Emerson Etheridge, of Tennessee. If Lincoln is elected he will have no difficulty in finding men in every section of the Union willing to accept of all the offices at his disposal, but the Cabinet makers had better wait until they ascertain whether Lincoln is elected before making a Cabivet for him, . Goon Avvice.—The election being over, . and having little to do, except wait for the returns, the editor of the Marysville Democrat bas taken to reading the Bible, and ; advises all good Democrats to do the same. Through the kindness of some of his many friends, he will go where a very lucrative situation will be given to him, He is to have the general superintendence of a rold mine, which is being successfuliy worked, t is owned by some of our millionaires, and it is confidentially stated that, with even ordinary luck, money enough can be made by Fowler to enable him'to return home very soon, and save his bondsmen in a very short time. Fowler, it will be remembered is a government defaulter to a large amount—several bundred thousand dollars, we believe —and if he can save that amount from his
wages as superintendent of a gold mine, he will be lucky, indeed. The dispatch states that Breckin. ridge will probably carry the State, but no reason is given for such a sapposition. It was expected that Breckinridge would have a majority in the southern counties, but no reliable estimate can be made asto how that State has gone until the counties north of the Callapooia mountains are heard from, Freaks or Ligurnine.—Near Olympia, Washington Territory, recently, the house of a farmer was struck by lightning. The current ran down the chimney nearly to the ground and then divided; one branch tore up the ground and killed a kitten, narrowly missing a bed where the family slept; the other branch broke the looking glass and tore a hole through the floor. During the storm the lightning was almost a continuous sheet of flame, Great Castinc.—Quite a crowd assembled at the Washington Navy Yard, October 15th, to witness the casting of a propeller for the Government steamship Pensacola.
