THE BREEZE IN THE CHURCH. . ‘Twas a sunny day, and the morning psalm We sang in the church together; We felt in our hearts the joy and calm Of the calm and joyous weather. The slow, and sweet, and sacred strain, Through every bosom stea ling, : Checked every thought that was light and vain, And waked each holy feeling. We knew by its sunny gleam how clear Was the blue sky smiling o’er us, And in every pause in the hymn could hear The wild bird’s happy chorus. And lo! from its haunts by cave or rill, With a sudden start awaking, A bréeze came fluttering down the hill, Its jragrant pinions shaking. Through the open windows it bent its way, And down the chance)’s center, Like a privileged thing that at will might stray And in holy plagos enter. From niche to niche, from nook to nook, With a lightsome rug tic flying, It litted the leaves of the Holy book, On the alter-cushion lying. , It fanned the old clerk’s hoary hair, And the children’s bright young faces ; Then vanished, none knew, how or where, ; Leaving its pleasant traces, . NNR SA ME AES MO ER . Orrostre Ixvivexce of THe Sexes.—. Why is it that ia ninesy-nine cases out of a) hundred those women who have been . brought up ehiefly among men, who have . had no sisters, who bave lost a mother ear. ly in life, (doubtless for many reasons 4) sad affliction to a girl,) who have been dependent on fathers or brothers for society and conversation, should tura out the most . fascinating and superior of their sex? Why is it that in nine hundred and ninety-nine cases out of a thousand, the boy who is ed. ucated solely by his mother, becomes a tri. umphaot and successful man in after life ’ Perhaps the opposite influence of either sex . is beneficial to the other ; perbaps the girl . derives vigorous thoughts, expauded views, habits of reflection, nay, more, charity and forbearance, from her male associates, as . the boy is indebted to bis mother’s tuition . and his mother’s companionship for the gentleness and purity of heart which combines so well witha manly and generous nature, for the refinement and delicacy of . feeling whieh soadorns true courage ; above all, for that exalted standard of womankind which shall prove his surest safeguard from sbame and defeat in the com. ing battle ; a shield impervious so long as . itis bright, but which once soiled, slides . and crumbles from his grasp, leaving bim . in the press of angry weapons a naked and defenseless man.—[Fraser’s Magazine. Staves In Western Kentucky.—In Western Kentucky, where the Secessionists are io the majority, the negroes belonging to the rebels, as well as those of the Union men, are all made by the rebels to believe that if Jeff. Davis succeeds they will be made free, All the negroes, no matter by whom owned, are dangerously insoleat to the Union men, and especially to the female portion of the families of the latter. The rebela employ their slaves in sacking the farms and running off the chattels aad stock belonging to the Union men, EEE SD Beware or Copwess,—An acquaintance . of ours happened into the wine cellar of one of our large liquor dealers the other day, found boys employed in enveloping bottles . of wine with cobwebs, so as to convince the customers that their wines were old, from . the webs which had accumulated upon the . bottles. This is the last way of ageing wine which has come to our knowledge. It goes far abead of the old plan of smoking the labels upon the bottles. . Tuk Orggon Wueat Cror.—The Portland Advertiser estimates the present wheat crop of Oregon as being tifty per ceat less than . last year, The falling off, the Advertiser . thinks, is not owing to any unfavorable circumstances attending the growth of the . crop, but simply to the fact that the pre. vious low rates of the article caused much . lese seed to be sown than usual, A consid. erable amount of the old crop still remains . on haad, . . . . } . Tas Coonera iN Ivpta.—In India, where . the cholera, in its most malignaut form, firat emerged and spread throughout the world, it has again made its appearance, and is terribly destructive of human life. . It is probable that it may a second time pass over Europe, and this country, Tuk annual cost of working the railways of Great Britain and Ireland, exclusive of rates and government duties, is sixty million dollars. But if we would know what the true enjoyment of life is, we must learnto walk. We have no lark to tempt us, by the exqaisite music of bis morning bymo, to walk before sunrise, nor nightingale to lure us out to evening rambles; the sweet-ecented violet, the early primrose and fragrant thorn are . absent from our hedgerows and oar lanes.
