The Volunteers of Sicily.
The New York Times has the following
interesting incidents of the Sicilian revolation:
An interesting story is told of one of
Garibaldi’s volunteers, Two or three days
before the Dictator’s departure from Palermo for Melazzo he reviewed the corps of
Major Sicoli, just arrived from Genoa. lu
the rankshe observed a small, pale and
beardless boy, who bad scarcely strength
enough to raise his musket to his shoulder.
Garibaldi ordered him, with surprise and a
little of severity, to advance from the
ranks. He inquired his age, and the boy
answered, with a blush, “seventeen,” al-.
though in fact be did not appear more than
fourteen, and certainly was not fe age he
gave himself, The General éomplatued to
Major Sicoli that the Piedmontese Committee should send him euch recruits, to which
the Major replied that the Committee no
doubt thought that the patriotism of the
volunteer was 8 compensation for bis want
of age. ‘Ob, yes, that’s it,” said Garibaldi, with bamor, ‘and the next thing is I
shall be charged with the abduction of minore.’? >
The yang voluntee ood trembling,
with his eyes on the grom™d, “Your place
is not here,’ said the ,soldier roughly; go
back to school.”’ The volunteer blushed to
bis eyes, when Garibaldi added with more
mildaces in bis voice,,“"You see that your
gun is too heavy for your small arms—give
it to your neighbor; we have no arms to
spare.’’ Garibaldi gave the order that the
young volunteer should be sent back with
some others who bad been: found in the
same condition by the next steamer; but
when the moment of departure arrived the
young volunteer was nowhere to be found.
‘All that was known of bim was that bis
Christian name was Quinte and that he was
the son of a lawyer in Milan, Nothing
more was thought of him for the moment.
Oa the 16th and“17th of July two partial
engagements took place between the troops
of Col. Medici and the enemy near Barcelova, It was then that Medici sent to Palermo for Garibaldi, in anticipation of the battle which took place immediately after. at
Melazgo. When Garfbaldi arrived at Barcelona he first directed his steps to the ambalance, to visit the wounded of Medici’s
two skirmishes. who numbered, perbaps,
fifty persons, He stopped with surprise before the bed of a beardless boy, whom he
recognized at ence as Quinto. Garibaldi
interrogated him as to how he got : there,
wounded after having been off to Genoa,
The boy, more embarrassed than the first
time, made his confession. He had scampered across the fields, bad gained the high
road to Messina, and followed on till be
caught up with the army of Medici. Whea
Medici sent forward his reconnoitering party toward Melazzo and became engaged

ment, even after the disease has batfled the skill of
eminent physicians and resisted all their means of .
cure, The medicines prescribed are pleasant, with.
out odor, entirely vegetable, causing no sickness, and .
free from mereury or balsam. During fifteen years
of practice, ii Burope, the Atlantic States, and California, I have rescued from the jaws of death many
thousands, who, in the last stages of the above men
tioned diseases, had been given up to die by their
physicians, which warrants me in promising to the
afflicted, who may place themselves under my care, &
perfect and agent cure. Private dixeases are the
greatest enemies to health, as they are the first cause
of Consumption, Serofala, and many other diseases,
and should be a terror to the human family, A permanent cure is ming . ever effected, a majority of
the cases falling into the hands of incompetent per.
sons, who not only fail to eure the disease, but ruin .
the constitution, filling the system with mercury, .
which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a .
rapid consumption. .
But should the disease and the treatment not cause
death speedily, and the victiin marries, the disease is
entailed upon the children, who are born with feeble
constitutions, and the eurrent of life corrupted by a
virus, which betrays itself in serofula, tetter, ulcers,
eruptions, and other affections of the skin, eyes,
throat and Jungs, ,entailing upon them a brief exis.
tance of suffering, and consigning them to an early
rave,
. Suty-Anuse is another formidable enemy to health,
for nothing else in the dread catalogue of human diseases causes 80 destructive a drain upon the system, .
drawing its thousands of victims, through a few years
of suffering, dawn to an untimely grave. It destroys
the nervous. system, rapidly wastes away the energies of life, causes mental derangement, prevents the
proper devélopement of the system, payee for
marridge, society, business, and all earthly happineas, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body and
mind, predixposed to consumptiong and a train of
evils more to be dreaded than death itself, With the
fullest confidence I assure the unfortunate victims
of Self-abuse, that a permnanent aad speedy cure can be effected, afid with the abandonment of ruinous
practices my patients can be restored to robust, vigorous health. °
drregelarities, and all diseases of males and females,
treated on principles established by fifteen years of
practice, and sanctioned by thousands of the most
with the enemy, Quinto watched his chance
till one of the men fell; he then seized the
fallen man’s gun and accoutrements and
Vonnded forward into the thickest of the
fight.
euAnd that’s the way, you little rascal,’”’
sald Garibaldi, smiling, “that you have got
yourself maimed, Where is your wound?”
At thie question, Quinto lost countenance,
but replied, “In the back, General.” “Ob!
obl’’ said Garibaldi, with a smile of pity,
“You now see, coglione, that war is no
child’s play; I hope the wound is not dangerous?”’? “Oh, no, only a spent Dall.’’
Garibaldi walked away witha shrug of
the shoulder’, In the back! The poor boy
understood the insinuation too well, but
could not find at the moment words with
which tojastify himself, But when the General was goue, he rolled himself no his
bed of straw shedding tears of rage and
humiliation,
The aa had not seen the young volunteer for the last.time. The incidents
which accompanied the battle of Melazzo
are known, At the most critical moment,
when the Dictator was ie ed in a handto-hand fight in his own defense, he sai
euddenly re-appear at his side the young
volunteer he had left the evening before at
the ambulance. “What! the gamin again!”
exclaimed Garibaldi. But at the eame moment the poor boy made an effort to show
his bleeding breast, and uttering a ery worthy of a hero of antiquity, “This time, General, it is the good sidel’’ he feli dead at
Garibaldi’s feet.
Wewt Saiw.—If we spend the. time, the
nervous energy and mental fire, in doing
the daties of mental life, which we often
spend in dreading them, we and the world
would he stronger and better. All the gevere.tasks of life grow more and more formidable as we look at them from a distance,
while we grow weaker all the while, and
less disposed to gtapple with them. We
should enquire, with an honest, brave heart,
what are our duties here and now: and
with what of mental energy we can summon at the moment, we should go forward
to perform them. In the very act of attempting to do them, we shall gaia strength
todo them. Not before, but at time, the
needed strength will come. Not while we
dread, but while we do the work of life, the

SaGactry or A Doa.—A Scotbh paper relates the following instance of the sagacit
of a dog, which was manifested on the 30th
of July, at Berwick, in Berwickshire. A
dog came to the station master, and played
such antics to and fro, as induced the master to follow along the railway bridge; a
poor man was found lying run over by a
railway train, one leg so frightfally crashed as to require amputation to save his life.
Had it not been for the dog, another train
speedily due would bave passed over the
man’s body and cut him to pieces,

Mesars, A. B, & D. Sanps,
Dear Sirs bave for a number of yeara been
troubled with sore and inflamed eye-lids, which
though they never caused me much pain, were very
annoying on other accounts, I have tried a number
of medicines at different times without the slightest
success. Seeing an advertisement of your Roman
Kye Balsam, in spite of my skepticism, I resolved to
get some, and at least try it. Iam now writing this
inthe fullest gratitude to inform you (1 could almost send you a fifty dollar bill) that a few and only
a few, applications have resulted in a complete cure.
Respectfully yours
