The Poor Voter on Election Day.
BY J. O, WHITTIER.
The proudest now is but my peer,
The highest not more high;
To-day, of all the weary year,
A king of men am I!
To-day, alike are great and small,
The nameless and the known;
‘My palace is the people’s hall,
¢ ballot-box my throne.
Who serves to-day spon the list
Beside the served shall stand;
Alike the brown and wrinkled fist,
The gloved and dainty hand,
‘The rich are level with the poor,
The wenk are strong to-day;
And sleekest broadcloth counts no more
Than homespun frock of gray.
To-day let pomp and false pretense
My stubborn right abide;
J set a plain man's common sense
Against tie pedant’s pride,
To-day shall simple manbood try
The strength of gold and land;
The wide World has not wealth to buy
4, The power in my right hand,
While there’s a grief to need redress,
Or balance to adjust,
‘Where weigh our loving manhood less
Than Mammon’s vilest dust;
Where thore’s a right to claim my vote,
Or wrong to sweep away,
Up! clouted knees and rugged coat!
A man’s a man to-day.
‘Ocr Arracumenr to Lire.—The young
mao,till 30, never feels practically that he is
mortal, He knows it, indeed, and, if need
were, he could preach a homily on the fragility of life; but he brings it not bome to
himself any more than in a hot June we
can appropriate to our imagination the
freezing days of December, But now—
shall I conress the troth?—I feel these audits but too powerfully. 1 begin to count
the probabilities. of my duration, and to
grudge at the expenditure of moments and
shortest periods, like wiser’s fartbings, Io
proportion as the years both lessen and
shorten, I set more account upon their periods, and wonld fain lay my. ineffectual
finger upon the kpoke of the great wheel. 1
am not content to pass away “like a weaver’s ebattle,”’ Those metapbors solace me
not, noc sweeten the unpalatable dranght
of mortality. I care not to be carried with
the tide that smoothly beurs human life to
eternity.’ I am in love with this green
earth—the face of town and country—the
unspeakable rural solitude, and the sweet
security of streets, I would set up my tabernacle bere. Iam content to stand still
at the age at which I am arrived—to be no
younger, noricher, no handsomer. I do
not want to be weaned by age, or drop,
like mellow fruit, as they say, into the
grave. Any slteration on this earth of
mine, in diet or in lodging, puzzles and discomposes me. My household gods plant ao
terribly fixed foot, and are not rooted u
without blood. They do not willing!y see
Lavinian shores. A new state of being
staggers me, Sun and sky, and breeze, and
solitary walks, and summer holidays, and
the greenness of flelds, and the juices of
meats and fishes, and society, and the cheerful glase, and candlelight, and fireside conversations, and jests, and irony—do not
these things go out with life? Cana ghost
laugh, or shake his gaunt sides, when you
are pleasant with bim?—[Charles Lamb,
Fiowens.—T. Starr King thus speaks of
the flowers of California, in a letter written
bome toa friend:
“Imagine yourself looking across a hundred acres of wild meadow; stretching to
the base of hills nearly two thousand feet
high, the whole expanse swarming with little straw-colored, wild sun-flowers, orange
poppies, squadrons of purple beauties, battalions of pink--and then the mountain,
unbroken by a tree or a rock, glowing with
the iuvesture of all those bues, softened and
kneaded by distance. This is what I saw
on the road to San Mateo, The orange and
purple seemed to predominate in the mountain robe, But on the lower slopes, and
reaching midway its height, was a strange
sprinkling of blue, gathered here and there
into intensev stripes, and running now and
then into sharp points, as if ovér the general basis of purple, orange*and yellow,
there had fallen a violent snow, which lay
tenderly around the base, but io a few places on the side had been blown into drifts
and points, :

INTERESTING ReMminiscence.—The Marysville Express states that at the dedication
of the new Presbyterian Chuvch, Rev, Mr,
Walsworth read a letter, with much feeling,
from Rev. Mr. Brier, who was the first minister of that Church in Marysville. In the
pioneer clergyman’s journal, read on that
occasion, the following passage occurs:
“Maryaville is situate between the Feather
and Yuba rivers, on the banks of the latter;
ie a place of trade; contains about. tifteen
hundred or two thousand people—twenty
families; has about five hundred and ninety
houses and tents,"more than half of them
cloth, some large frame buildings; is very
dusty and abounds in fleas!’’
Important Post Orricn Dectstox.—Attorney General Black has decided that the
Posteffice Department has the power to
withold letters addressed to fictition names
when they have been assumed to defraud .
and cheat the public. The fraudulent inteut, however, must bo very clear. It is} ey 'haitan hour with a t
very common for sharpers to use the postal service to carry on their opeartions more
widely, afd reach persons otherwise beyond
their scope, and to operate altogether nunder fictitious names; and a case of this kind
at Baltimore, in regard to which the Department desired legal advice, was the occasion of the Attoraey General's decision,
. aye spots appearing before the eyes, Loss of Sight,
Jim Crow Rice, the origioator of negro
miostrelsy, died lately in poverty at the
age of fifty-two—a victim to dissipation.

originated, however long standing or obstinate the
case, recovery is certain, and in a shorter time than
a permanent cure can be effected by any other treatment, even after the disease has baffled the skill of
eminent physicians and resisted all their means of
cure. The medicines prescribed are pleasant, without odor, entirely vegetable, causing no sickness, and
free from mercury or balsam. During fifteen years
of practice, in Europe, the Atlantic States, and California, I have rescued from the jaws of death many
thousands, wha, in the last stages of the above men
tioned diseases, had been given-up to die by their
physicians, which warrants me in promising to the
affiicted, who may place themselves under my care, a
perfect and ‘speedy cure, Private diseases are the
greatest enemies to health, as they are the first cause
of Consumption, Serofuln, and many other diseases,
and should be a terror to the human family. A permanent cure is scarcely ever effected, a inajority of
the cases falling into the hands of incompetent persons, who not only fail to cure the disease, but ruin
the constitution, filling the system with mercury,
which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a
rapid consumption,

upon the children, who are born with feeble
constitutions, and the current of life corrupted by a
virus, which betrays itself in scrofula, tetter, ulcers,
eruptions, and other affections of the askin, eyes,

rave,
» Sxir-Apuse is another formidable enemy to health,
for nothing else in the dread catalogue of human diseases causes so destructive a drain upon the system,
drawing Its thousands of victims, through a few years
of suffering, down to an untimely grave, It desttoys
the nervous system, rapidly wastes away the energies of life, causes mental derangement, prevents the
proper developement of the syxtem, disqualifies for
marriage, society, business, and all earthly happi‘ness, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body and
mind, predisposed to consumption; and a train of
evils more to be dreaded than death itself, With the
fullest confidence I assure the unfortunate victims
