BY GRANT THORBURN, In 1805 the yellow fever prevailed in New York to a fearful extent. I never left the city on these occasions, I eat in my shop door in the cool of the day. I beheld a man progressing from the South; he walked in the middle of * the street, and was reading the names on the sign boards. He stopped at my door. “Mr, Thorburn,” said he, “Iam just come from the ship Draper, from Liverpool, Tama carpenter by trade; I can’t find work. Can’t you tell me where I can find board, till the fever is over? My name is Robert Hoe.” He looked*young, simple and honest. I knew the heart of the stranger. I called my wife. “My dear,” says [, “this stranger ean neither find work nor board; will you board him ?”” “Yes,” said she. “If he takes the nurse him ?”? “TJ will,” she replied. “Thank you,” said I, “for this, God will bless ou.” . Before one week elapsed, he took the fever. I procured an eminent physician; my wife and T nursed him. On the fourth day of the fever, he was under the operation of powerful medicine. The fever was coursing through his veins, and burning up his English blood. I sat by his side. He fastened his eyes on mine. “OQ, Mr. T.,”” he exclaimed, ‘I shall die! I ean never stand this,” “Die? To be sure, Robert, we must all dic. But you are not going to die this week. think I shall see you a waster builder in New York, and married to a bonny Yankee lass, and I live to carry your grand-children in my arms et,” There was alull in the fever, when the medicine commenced operating. He dropped asleep—from that hour the fever left bim. When I held the cooling drops to his lips and ressed bis burning head between my hands, I ittle thought that there lay the germ of a machine that was destined to revolutionize the world of literature. At that time, a common school Bible costa dollar—now they are sold for twenty cents. His sons added several improvements to their father’s invention—they are much esteemed wherever known. fever will you help me to ago. Stepping from the cars, I noticed a deeent looking citizen among the spectators,— Says I: 2 “Sir, my business will detain me a week in this town. I don’t like to stop at a tavern; can you inform me where I may find a quiet, private family, where I may board ?”” “I can,” he replied. ‘Come with me.” We turned acorner. On a piazza, in front of a respectable dwelling, sat a comely matron. On her lap sat a child that might have seen six summers. “Good wife,’ says my "conductor, “this is Mr. Thorburn, from New York. He wants priyate lodgings. Can you board him a week?” “That I will,” she she, ‘for a twelve-mooth if he saysso. I often heard my father tell how Mr. Thorburn took him into his bouse and nursed him. when he took the yellow fever,”’ “What was your father’s name?” I inquired, “overt Hoe,” she replied, “Ts that your child?” “Tt is,” said she, I took the babe in my arms. Said I: “Madam, ’tis over forty years, when, cheering your father, I told him I hoped to carry his grandchild in my arms. This day my prediction is fulfilled in your eyes.” ConaressionaL Bratns.—The Lowell Courier tells of alCongressman from Maine who paid a political editor $10 to write his acceptance of the nomivation, and $10 more to write bis pet to his constituents on the occasion of his re-election. The price is entirely too cheap. The “honorable’? member doubtless valued the brains of the editor at the price he put upon his constituents’ and hisown, He had no doubt often cheated them by a ten dollar speech, with the belief that he wasa man of ability and a profound statesman. He is not the firat political legislator who has been indebted to an editor for all the public distinction he ever acquired. SkeLerons oF Men Ten Freer Hicw.—Mr. W. D. Frazer writes to the Cincinnati Gazette from Winchester, Indiana, that a half.a mile northwest of that place is an old fort, including about thirty-six acres of ground within the fortification. The mound in the centre is about twenty-five feet high, "while the fort or breastwork nou about fifteen feet. Directly east and west of the mound are openings or gateways, around which are other forts, A quarter of a mile northwest of the fort in the burying ground, where bones have been exhumed of men that were perhaps ten feet tall. Any one who doubts the latter statement he says may oall at his office and see the evidence. Over.—A en had a bad memory; a friend knowing this, lent him the same book seven times over ; and being asked afterwards how he liked it, replied: “I think it an admirable production, but the author sometimes repeats the same things.” Op Spear.—From late Boston papers, we learn that Geo. G. Speer, the well-known comedian, has been pronounced insane, and is how an inmate of the Worcester Asylum. He is well known to most Californians. A Lapy wished a seat; a portly, handsome gentleman brought one and seated her. “Ob, eh a jewel” saidshe. “Ob, no,’’ replied e, ‘I’m a jeweller—I have just set the jewel,” Could there have been anything more gallant than that? The various diseases which have their imprints on the surface of the body, may be compared to signals of distress thrown out by Nature to indicate that the vital organization within needs cleansing and purifying. The ancients believed that animal lifo existed in the blood, It is at least certain that HEALTH DEPENDS Upon the punrry of that fluid, Uf the skin is in an unnatural state, as in Scrofula, Leprosy, and all Uleerous Diseases, it is evident that tho vessels which ramify over tho surface of the ges # must be charged with diseased blood; and if so, the whole volume of blood, venous and arterial, is impure. Before a cure can be effected there must be a purification of the vital stream, The great obJect, therefore, is to ascertain what remedies will act most directly upon the constituents of the blood when in the act of combination, Experience, observation, and a cloud of witnesses, establish tho fact that this preparation is at the very head of this class, and will soon restore the clreume to a healthy state by eradicating the elements of STILL FURTHER TESTIMONY. Wrest Kivunerry, Conn., June 12th, 1857, Messrs. A. B. & D. Sanns: Gentlemen,—The following case came under my observation, in which your Sarsaparilla effected the cure of a severe case of Chronic Rhoumatism. The patient, Mr. Joseph K. Green, has been afflicted with rheumatism for years by turns, which sometimes was attended with fever, and put on an acute form in a few days. He used various remedies, under the advice of his sa) bp which produced but partial relief; and in reply to his inquiry, if something could not be done to effect 8 manent’ cure, I advised him to use your Sarsaparilla. Te accordingly commenced its use, and the effect was so marked that he was able to seep the first night comparatively free from pain. He continued it, and before he had taken twelve bottles he was entirely free from the disease, and has remained 80 since, being able to pursue his business, and is now a eer for the town of Brooklyn in our Legislature, Very respectfully yours, WM. The demands of socie. ty imperiously comand their publicity, and we commend their perusal to the attention of all afflicted: (CERTIFICATE. } The undersigned, desirous of acquainting those who may be unfortunate enough to be similarly afflicted, where a ermanent relief of their sufferings may be obtained, feels t his duty to thus publicly express his most sincere gratitude to Dr. L, J. Czarkay for the permanent recovery of Borne down by the distressing symptoms in cident to the vicious practice of uncontrolable passion in youth; depressed in body and mind; unable to perform even the most trifling duty imposed upon the daily avocations of life, I sought the advice of many physicians, who at first regarded my disease as of tritling importance—but alas! after a few weeks, ana in several instances months, of their treatment, I found to my unutterable horror, that instead of relief, my symptoms beeame more alarming in their torture; and, being told by one that my disease, being principally confined to the brain, medicines would be of little consequence, I despaired of ever regaining my health, strength, and energy; and, asa last resort, and with but faint hope, called upon Dr. Czarkay, who, after examining my case, preseribed some medicine which almost instantly relieved me of the dull pain and dizziness in my head. Encouraged by this result, 1 resolved to place myself immediately under his care, and by a strict obedi. ence to all his directions and advice, myhead became clear, my ideas collected, the constant pain in my back and groins, the weakness in my limbs, the nervous reaction of my whole body on the slightest alarm or excitement, the . misanthropy and evil forbodings, the sell-distrust and want of confidence in others, the inability to study and want of resolution, the frightful, exciting and at times pleasurable dreams at night, followed by involuntary discharges, have all disappeared; and in fact, in two months after having consulted the Doctor, I felt as if inspired by a new life— that life which, buta short time ago, I contemplated to end by my own hand. With a view to guard the unfortunate from falling into the snares of incompetent quacks, I deem it my duty to offer this testimony to the merit and skill of Dr. CzarKay, and recommend him to all who may stand in need of medical advice, being assured by my own experience, that once under his care a radical and permanent cure will be effected. B. F. Fintvore. State of California, County of San Francisco, Subscribed and sworn to before me, this 17th day of April, a. p. 1857. jSigned 8 Joun Mippieton, Notary Public. C A R D.—Prompted by an honest desire of my heart, I wish to lay before the public a case which deserves a high commendation, not only as an act of scientifle skill, but that of humanity also. About two years ago I suddenly, and from causes unknown to me, was seized with a fit of EPILEPSY, which, owing to my inability to meet the expenses consequent upon a thorough medical treatment, and the discouragement which I met with on attempting t, soon became such (as I was then led to believe) as to defy the skill of any physician. 1 was frequently while in the pursuit of my calling, thrown down to the ground, without the slightest warning; and although insensible to the agonies, I yet despised the miseries of my life, and } soon learned to look upon those who would rendor assistance, or shelter me trom danger, as enemies who sought to prolong the existence of my miseries. While in this state, and having previous to my affliction tasted the sweets of life, I once more was induced to attempt seeking aid of a physician, and, by recommendation, called upon Dr. L, J, Czarpkay. I told him my cireumstances, and of my inability to reward him for his services, . regardless of which, however, he at once undertook my case, and with the blessing of God, I was once more restored to perfect health, Unable to reward him for the boon which I enjoy at present, and yet conscivus of my indebtedness, I consider it due to myself and to all afflicted, to make the case public, in order that those in need of medical advice may find a physician in whom every confidence can be placed. YOUNG’S Private Medical Office—To the Afilicted—In this age of proprogress when science is almost miraculous, everything in common place is jooked upon as not worth notice. In view of this fact, Dr. Young, (corner of Montgomery and California streets, up stairs,) has concluded to leave the beat. en track hitherto pursued by most. scientific physicians, . (that of waiting for the public to fnd you alone,) and publish to the world as much as may be, his knowledge of the healing art, to let those are in necd of assistance know . where they ean find relief without being imposed upon. . In continuation of this subject, Dr. Young would say, that for the past ten yesrs he has pursued the practice of . medicine in one of the largest cities in the United States, with the highest suecesa, and that his standing as a physician is without reproach, having at one time been a leeturer at the University of Pennsylvania on venreal diseases, . Upon these considerations, Dr, Young has eontidence in . introducing himself to the public, knowlng that they will . sustain well earned merit, The following are a few of the many testimonials which haveappeared in the public journals within the last few . years: [From the Boston Medical Journal.) Although we are opposed to the system of advertising, for guod and sufficient reasons, still we deem it but justice to say that Dr, Young is one of the most industrious and indefatiguable yotaries of medical science in the United States. [From Professor Jackson. . The subscriber is personally acquainted with Dr. Youug, and has seen much of his practice, and can bear testimony te his inerits as a practitioner. {From the New York Herald.] The eminence of this distinguished gentleman in his profession, and the very extended opportunities possessed’ by him for the observation of venereal disease, makes services invaluable to those afflicted with the above complaints. Human nature at best is but frail, all are liable to misfortune, Of all the ills that atleet man, none are more terrible than those of a private nature. Dreadful as itis in the person who contracts it, frightful as are its ravages upon his constitution, ending frequently In. destruction anda loathsome grave, it becomes of still greater importance when it is transmitted to to innocent offspring. Such being the case, how necessary it becomes that every one hay ing the least reason to fear that every onc haying the least reason to fear that they have contracted the di ; should attend to it at onee by consulting some physician whose respectability and education enables bimto warrant asafe, speedy, aud permanent cure. In accordance with this necessity, DR. YOUNG feels entled upon to state that by long study and extensive practice, he has become perse nomination of venereal, and having paid more attention to that one branch than any other physician in the United States, he feels himself better qualified to treat them. The Doctor effects a curein recent cases ina few days, and finds no difficulty in curing those ofa long duration, without submitting the patient to such tieatment as will draw upon him the slightest suspicion, or oblige him to neglect his business whether within doors or without.— The diet need not be changed except in cases of severe in. flamation. MPORTANT TO FEMALES.—WHEN A female is in trouble or affiicted with disease, and requires medical or surgical aid, the inquiry should be where is there a physician who is fully competent to administer relief, one whose knowledge of the female system is perfect, and who thoroughly understands the application of medicine to disease, and whose scientific attainments in surgery have made him pre-eminentin his profession, and whose respectable standing in society, recommends him to the confidence of the community. Unless these, and many more questions evn be satisfactorily answered, the afflicted should pause before consulting any one, Considering these things in their true light. the celebrated J.C. YOUNG, corner of Montgomery and California streets, has concluded to advertise his place of business to the public, stating that he has been a professor of obstetrics and feified to administer in all diseases, both medically and surgically, not in a superficial manner, but in as thorough a manner as years of study and practice—hoth in hospitals and private families, can make ; therefore, families can rely upon him as a father Allin affliction can findin him . placed, Come all ye that are afflicted and in trouble, and you will be relieved or eured, Apartments privately ar.
