DeatH oF 4N Anm® Orricer.—The War Department hes received intelligence of the death of Captain Joba H. Greland, fourth artillery, oa the 17th ult,, at Fort Myers, Florida. Cot. Benton had been lying dangerously ill at Washington, but at last accounts his health bad improved and he was cousidered out of daager. Fins 1x Kxoxvug,—Sept. 11th a fire in Keokuk destroyed rty to the amount of en eee. The siaee Y diese are Wooster & Temple. Marceurt & Page, aud Messrs. Dustin, Merrisou, McLearing, and Auskamp. An insurrection, headed -by two desperate negro convicts, broke out in the Michigau State prison on the 7th September. Two of the convicts sueceeded ia escaping over the walls, but were recaptured. Others also made desperate etiurts to escape, but were overpowered by the officers of the prison aud secured. Deatu of 4 Member or Concress —James Lockhart. Democratic Congressmau elect from the Evaasville District, Iudiana, died at Evansville on the moraing of September 7th. This makes the second member who has died since the election in Indiana last fall. Desra or Ex-Gov. Bissuii.—Clark Bissell, who was chosen Governor of Couuecticut in 1848, by the Whigs, died ut his residence, Norwalk, Conn., on Tuesday morning, aged 75 years. He was a lawyer and gentleman of the old schoul, and very generally respected. Tuk OvertaNp MaiL.—The contract for carrying the United States mail over the land route to California, was signed at Washingtoa . on the 16th September. Messrs. John Butterfield, Wm. B. Dinsmore, Wm. G. Fargo, Alex. ander Holland. J. V. P. Gardner, M. L. Kenyon, Hamilton Spencer and others, are the coutrac. tora. Six huadred thousand dollars per anowm, for six years, is the price to be paid the contractors. A week previous Gray murdered Robert Abernathy, a . worthy and respectable cit:zen of the southern . part of the county. Aberuathy was found dead in h’s corn field with twelve buck-shot in his back. New Granada regrets the Panama massacre, and promises to punish offenders when convicted. The same towns last year gave Hamlin 43.254; Wells, 25.639; Patten, 4381—a Republican majority ef 13, 234; which shows a net Republican Jose this year of 5174. The returns of the Repr sentatives elected give the Republicans 90 and the Democrats 21. Of the 40 districts yet to be heard frem. the . Republicans have probably elected 22 and the . Democrats 18. A Famity Potsoxen.—A dispatch to the New . Orleans True Delta, gives the details of a horridle affair which occurred in Pike county Alabama, on Saturday Sept. 13th: The family and servants of Mr. Thomas Fraeell, consisting of himself, bis overseer, the latter’ wife, two children, a Mrs. Clond, Mr. Fraeell’s grand daughter, and thirty others. were poisoned with arsenic by the cook. a negra woman. She pnt the arsenic in the food which she had prepared for dinner. Frasell, his overseer’s wife, two children, Mr. Frasell’s grand daughter and a Mrs. Cloud are dead, and the remaining vietims are in a very eriuical condition. Both of the culprits were arrested. tried. and found guilty, by ajury of . the people. The negro woman was immediatedy burnt ata stake. Comisxka had been sentenced to suffer the same punishment on the next Monday. The affair caused the wildest excitement throughout the neighborhood. September 12th. by the Association of Veterans. They marched to the Executive mansion, but learning that President Buchanan was absent at bis country residence, with a passing salute they marched on throngh . the beautiful grounds to the War Department. where they were addressed by the Secretary of War. Thy were afterwards addressed by the Secretary of the Navy. They next called out General Cass.
