? Mx. J. R. Rush of Grass Valley, was nominated fot Supervisor of the 2d District, in place of Dr. Davis-whose term expires this year. Dr. Davisy ihe was presented as a candidate for re-election, was defeated by a vote of the delegates of the district. Ninteen delegates were appointed to attend the Breckinridge State Convention, and the following gentlemen were eleeted by the delegates of their respective townships as a County Central “Nevada—A. T, Laird, John Grimes, C. T. OverI recy Knight, J. E. Holden, J. D. -C. f lor, 8. ots aw C. Ault, B. W. Taylor Z eport—H. P. Sweetland, D.C. Bryan, W. field: A.A. Olinger,. A. Jacobs, H. ArEureka—R. B. Moyes, C. W. Rush, J. M. Washington—J. B. Prewitt, W. H.C. Cloud, J. Be as ia . , ‘ork—M, Stinchfield, Robert West, E. J. PouiticaL MzgtinG.—A grand Lincoln-Breckinridge demonstration came off in this place on Satuirday evening. The meeting was held at the corwer of Broad and Pine streets, and some six or sevhi hundred persons were present. The meeting ‘was organized by the Republicans, and Thos. Fitch, the “eloquent Milwaukian,” being introduced, spoke about an hour, and was followed by Jas. Churchman of Nevada. Aboutthe time Churchman was concluding his remarks, a Breckinridge flag was raised across Pine street, opposite Grimes’ saloon, and the accommodating Lincolnites turning their faces in an opposite direction, were instantly transformed into Breckinridgers. In changing the character of the meeting, the band, which had been employed for the-occasion, and which held forth from the baleony of Kidd’s building, changed their position to an opposite corner of the building, and the speakers held forth from the sidewalk on Pine street. Tom. Henry was the first speaker called for, butthat gentleman failed to make his appearance, and the crowd was addressed by Messrs. Moyes, Crenshaw, C:'W. Hill and Chris, Cahalan. Some of the speakers were quite spirited, and the erowd at times noisy afid uproarous. Cheers were given for Douglas and Johnson, for the Breckinridge flag, and for Lincoln atid Hamlin, but we heard none for Breckinridge and Lane. There was more or less of a crowd in the street, and in the neghboring saloons until two o'clock in the morning, but the meeting was supposed to have adjourned about one o'clock. Suir aGarnst THE Criy.—A suit was commenced against the city, on Thursday last, by Thos, De Young, the owner of the team that broke through Pine street bridge some weeks ago, for the delay oceasioned by the bridge breaking. The damages were laid at one hundred and twenty-eight dollars. The trial of the case was commenced on Saturday, before Justice Smith, J. I. Caldwell appearing for the plaintiff and Geo, S, Hupp for the city. As the ease mostly involved points of law a jury was not ealled for. It was proven by the plaintiff's witnesse#that about forty dollars worth of barley was lost ; that one of the boards in the wagon-bed was split, and that a new wagon-bed would cost about sixty déllars. The testimony on the part of the plaintiff being closed, Mr. Hupp moved fora non-suit on seyétal points which were argued at length and taken under advisement by the Court. As many nice points of law are involved in this, it will probably be many months before it is finally determined. The Town Trustees, being of the opinion that the plaintiff has no just demand against the town, are determined to resist the payment of any damages, unless compelled to pay by law. Yesterday, the Justice overruled the motion for a new trial, and the case will now be taken to the County Court on points of law and facts. Count or Sesstons.—John Castania, indicted for assault with deadly weapon, for shooting Monier at Humbug, was brought before the Court on Monday and plead not guilty. His trial was set for Satwrday next. firs. Monier, indicted for stabbing Castania, also plead not guilty, and her trial was fixed for next Monday. The three Chinamen—Fong Yung, Ah Lipp and Ou Guey—indicted for burglary in breaking into Welch’s book store, were tried before a jury and conyicted, The stolen property was found in their possession, and that, with other circumstances, was condidered conclusive evidence of their guilt. They will be sentenced to-day. The case of Ed. Richardson, indicted for grand larceny, in stealing jewelry at Grass Valley, was tried yesterday. It was shown that Richardson had disposed of some of the stolen articles, and no attempt was made to account for having them in hig possession. The case was given tothe jury about half past four in the afternoon, and in al an hour they returned into Court, having found a verdict of guilty. Senrencen.—A. C. Nichols, convicted week before last of murder in the second degree, was sentenced by Judge Searls, on Saturday, to imprisonment in the State Prison for the period of eleven years. Nichols, it will be remembered, killed a negro, by stabbing him in a house of ill-fame at Grass Valley, on the 9th of March last. He was arrested and examined at the time, but discharged for want of evidence. New evidence having subsequently ichols was re-arrested in Sierra county wee found, Nicht wveda, and convicted of murder in the second degree. Accrpent.—Mr. Frederick Mansell met with a gevere accident on Wednesday. He was engaged in painting Baker & Wymore’s building on Broad etréet, when the ladder on which he was standing slipped, letting him fall upon the floor, and cislocating his left knee and one of his wrists. We are glad to learn that he is recovering from his injuries as rapidly as could be expected. Lue Broxen.—A miner named Con. O'Connell had his leg broken at Sailor Bar, Eureka township, on the 4th inst. He was picking under a bank, qwhen « quantity of earth and rocks fell upon his left leg, breaking it below the knee. Being without means of any kind, he was yesterday brought to Nevada and admitted to the county hospital. ARRIVAL oF ImMIGRANTS.—A party of immigrants, among whom were Mr. Baily and family, arrived at Nevada yesterday morning, having come by way ofthe Henness Pass. They had no diffiing the mountains, and report the in ry condition. ‘They left their stock at Jackson's Ranch to recruit. FasrrvaL.—The fruit festival, for the benefit of the Baptist Church, comes off at Temperance Hall to-motréw evening. Tickets, admitting @ lady and gentleman, $2,50. We are authorized to state that no lotteries, scramble-bags, or other institutions for fleecing the guests, will be tolerated at the festival. No.2, have made arrangements to have their carriage re-painted, lettered and decorated. Mr. Withington is now engaged on the work. No. 2’s are determined not to be out-done by No. 1's, if there is any virtue in paint and putty. PersonaL.—Miss Rowena Granice called at our office the other day, and presented the novelette entitled “The Victims of Fate,” of which she is the author. It purports to give some incidents in the life of the late Senator Broderick, mixed with fiction in order to make it interesting to novel readers. Sickness,—An unusual amount of sickness is prevailing in Nevada county at the present time. Last week there were twenty-nine patients in the county hospital, being a — number than was ever in before at any one time. Newsparer Favors.—We are indebted to Stone & Bro. for copies of the Marysville Appeal furnished us during the past week; also, to H. H. Sands’ Sarsaparilla—For Purifying the Blood— Health depends almost entirely upon the state of the blood. If the vitalizing fluid which pervades every tissue membrane, fibre, filament, gland or other organ, primary and subsidiary, be charged with the elements of disease, sickness must be the consequence, and until the cause is eradicated, po permanent relief can be expected. It is here that the powerful health restoring properties of SANDS’ SARSAPARILLA are manifested ; its searching operation reaches the germ of disease, and the cures it performs are therefore radical and thorough.
