Aewada Democrat, LOCAL MATTERS. TuunpDER STORM.—We were visited last . night witha severe rain storm, accompanied . by heavy thunder and sharp lightniug. The storm commenced about three o’clock a. M., and continued at intervals until between six . and seven. The quantity of rain that fell must . have been considerable, as the streets in places . were quite muddy this morning, and the dust . is laid in the roads in this vieiuity, District Count.—The trial of the case of . Jetfery vs. Baldwin, for the Glenbrook Race . Course, has been progressing in the District . court since Chursday morning. At noon today, there were quite a number of witnesses in attendance to be examined, and it was thought the case would not be concluded, so to be given to the jury, before Monday néxt. Opp Fgiitows’ Empitem.—tThe “ three. links,” an emblem of the Odd-Fellows, has been . tastefully carved out of a granite stone, to be . placed in the front wall of the Hall now being . erected for the Order in Nevada. The carving . was executed by Mr. Ross, and considering the . difficulty of cutting granite, it must be pronounced an excellent piece of vorkmanship, as . SNow IN THE MocuNntTAINS.—We learn from Mr. Simpkins, who arrived from Virginia City to-day, that there was a terrific snow storm in the mountains last night. The snow extended on this side, nearly to Jackson’s ranch. AsskssMENT RoLi.—The Auditor has nearly . completed the duplicate assessment roll, and will hand the same over to the Collector on . Monday next, pursuant to the statute. PostTMASTER FOR Rep Dog.—Mr. W. F. Heidlauf has been appointed Postmaster at Red Dog, in this county. In TowN.—Judge Campbell, of Sierra county, arrived in town yesterday, to attend to some . legal business in the District Court. ¢ ORDER FoR AkRESTS—The following is . the order received by Gen, Wright, com. muander of the Pacitic Department, for the . arrest of disloyal persons, It appears to be . a general order, and was probably directed . to all the U.S. Marshals and commanders of departinents: f Wak Department, 2 Washington, D. OG, Aug. 8, 1862. § Order, First—That the United States Marshals and Superintendent or Chiefs of Police of any town, city or district be, and they are hereby, authorized and directed to arrest and imprison any person or persons who may be en. gaged, by act, speech or writing, in discouraging volunteer enlistments, or in any way giving aid and comfort to the enemy, or in any other disloyal practice against the United States. Second—That an immediate report be made . to Major L. C. Turner, Judge Advocate, in or. der that such persons may be tried before a . military commission. Sie Third—The expenses of such arrests and imprisonment will be certified to the Chief Clerk . of the War Department for settlement and payment. Epwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. . Fisu From Betow.—Dr. Duncombe, of Sacramento’ county, who has a farm near Hicksville, tells the following to the Farmer, or that journal tells it for him: ‘*A well was bored on the farm with a fourinch augur, 60 feet deep, from which pure, sparkling water gushed up freely and continu. ously, forming a little rivulet, and creating near . its mouth a basin. From this well are con. stantly being thrown up very small fish—like minnows. From, the great depth they continually come—perfect fish, with eyes, and swim lively. But'ifthe water is allowed to remain . in the basin and become dirty or warm, they . die. They only exist in pure, cold, running water. Can naturalists tell where these fish come from?” New MAreRIAL FoR Pens.—In London, . pens are being made of horn. The horn is first heated, then rolled out under pressure into. sheets, after which it is cut out by a stamping machine into blanks of pens into any suitable size. These blanks are then softened by steam, placed in dies, the slits made in them, and the proper shape given. Wueat Wantep.—The London Economist says the wheat crop of England is short, and that an importation of breadstuffs, equal to that of 1861, will be necessary. The Banker's Magazine for July, gioomily says that “corn may be as difticult to procure as cotton.’ Toxacco in small quantities has been raised during the present season by a number of ranchmen in the vicinity of Sé acramento. Samples of several kinds, of excellent quality, were brought to the city a day or two ago. Grinpinc out Sprecre.—All the millsin! the vicinity of Virginia City are now in operation, the smoke therefrom re minding one of the manufacturing localities in the Eastern States. In Moravia there is a man living, a peasant, who is 147 years old, and still hale and hearty. He was formerly a eoldier r, and remarried at the age of 90. He lives on milk and potatoes. A Cvuniovus Rumor. _The Paris Patrie says the United States Government has offered to purchase the pens ince of Sonora for $6,000,000.
