NEVADA COUNTY MINING REVIEW four hundred, and times were lively. Cherokee was liveliest from 1856 to 1865, and during this time school-house, stores and saloons were built in a substantial manner. In 1875 the United States issued a town-site patent for the land upon which the town stands. Business is at a standstill at the present time. A few quartz ledges are being worked in the vicinity, and some of them give good prospects. At Badger Hill, near by, is located the Badger Hill Mine, which is being developed by the Quick Brothers. . ca FRENCH CORRAL This famous mining town is the b last on the Ridge between the Middle e and South Yuba Rivers. It has an . altitude of 2000 feet, and is about eighteen miles from Nevada City. The climate is most delightful, and a ——: oranges and other citrus fruits thrive oie it we ae here. This was one of the first settlements in the county, mining being carried on in the ravines here in 1849. In 1852 a ditch was brought in from Shady Creek, and miners began to settle quite rapidly. Here is located the celebrated hydraulic mine of the Milton Mining Company. No hydraulicking is now being done. The gravel in this mine is exceedingly rich, yielding on an average 41.5 cents to the cubic yard. The company has a twenty-stamp mill erected, and is engaged in crushing gravel cement from the Kate Hayes Mine. The Milton Company owns over two miles of ground, and has worked about a mile anda quarter. The product has been over $3,000,000. This company had worked twenty years up to January 1, 1895. Adjoining is the McLean ground, deemed to be as good as the Milton ground, as the pay channel runs into it from the Milton ground. The Slide quartz mine, owned by A. R. Dahlberg, is located on the South Yuba River. It is worked by a tunnel, and has a good ten-stamp millon it. The tunnel is in three hundred feet, and good ore has been VIEW OF KATE HAYES MINING Co's rey (Oy fra extracted, averaging $30 per ton. There isa good chance here for a big mine. The claim embraces 3000 feet on the ledge, and only needs capital to properly develop it into a paying property. French Corral has a good hotel, stores, etc., and has a population of about two hundred. ca BIRCHVILLE This is a small village on the Ridge, and lies on the great gravel channel, three miles and a half southwest of North San Juan. The first prospecting done here was in 1851 by David Johnson, the place being known as Johnson’s Diggings for some years. It was rechristened Birchville in 1853 by the miners who had settled there. Birchville boomed about 1865-6, and during the palmy days of hydraulic mining the place contained a good many inhabitants, although nownearly deserted. There is a good hotel here, and the traveling public is well cared for. At present but a few small claims are being worked in this vicinity. ca VOUSBEI This is a small but lively mining camp in the southeastern part of the county, about six miles from Grass Valley. It was located in the early part of 1857, and the town was named You Bet after Lazarus Beard, who built a small station on the hill, since washed away. By 1860 quite a town was in existence, most of the people living at Walloupa, situated opposite, moving to You Bet. In 1864 there were a number of stores, saloons and private residences in the town. There were thirteen cement mills within a radius of five miles. In April, 1869, the town was completely destroyed by fire, the loss aggregating $37,000, In 1872 the buildings were removed to the present site, and the old site has since been washed away.
