SvouT SU Tece Witie Morning, our river suddenly rose from three to four feet in. height. Big waves extending its whole width, surged furiously along, very seriously affecting the vessels at anchor, and tossing about the smaller craft asso many toys. .The water deepened rapidly, and some alarm was felt as to how it would all end. After the termina’ tion of fifteen minutes, however, this ‘influx began to subside, and the river became quiet asusual. At 4o’clock in the afternoon, a precisely similar movement commenced in an opposite.direction—the water rushed out, exhausting the river from three to four feet below the usual level. After this sudden freak the equilibrium of waters was again restored. Several gentlemen who observed this were puzzled how to account for it, as there was no wind stirring, and the lake was still. A precisely similar circumstance happened to ' Baffalo River some two years since, at the same time a severe shock of an earthquake was felt in Ontario and other Counties. Many were disposed to trace this effect to such acause. Whether our lake has its flood and ebb tide, or whether this phenomenon was caused by the “earth’s internal fire’ we leave for savans to investigate and decide.—Chieago Tribune, June 19. The Russian language is said to be one of the richest and most beautiful in the world. It is soft and agreeable in sound, and has not _ the defect of the Italian in being too effeminate; it contains many words that express the same ideas. If ever a Russian Shakespear or Milton arise, he will find an inexhaustible treasure in his native tongue wherewith to express his thoughts. But at present there is scarcely any national literature, owing to the deadening influence of the government. The principal Russian authors are Poushkin the poet, Caramskin, the historian, and Kirloff, the writer of fables. One of the western villages passed an Ordinance forbidding taverns to sell liquor on the Sabbath, to any persons except travelers. The next Sunday nearly every man in town was seen walking around with a Carpet Bag in one hand, and a pair of Saddle-bags in the other. z Hon. Josiah Quincy, Jr., in a recent lecture on Mormonism, stated that Joseph Smith the founder of the sect, was born of parents, who removed from the County of Essex, Mass. to Vermont, about the time of his birth— When in Essex County they lived in Middleton, within five miles of the spot, where the Salem Witchcraft sprung up Spiritual rappings still extensively prevail in the same neighborhood. What there is in that region that tends to raise Beelzebub, is an inquiry worthy of the most profound philosophical examination. A Lavy and a gentleman disputing upon @ subject, the lady testily remarked : “Sir, we cannot agree in anything.” “You are wrong, madam, said he. If you should go into a room in which there were two beds, a woman in one and a man in the other, with whom would you sleep? ”’ “With the lady, of course,” replied she. “So would I!” the gentleman replied. A London Builder has projected a scheme, under distinguished auspices, for the formation of a road through London, eight miles long, roofed in with glass, with houses and and shops on either side, and beyond these, also on each side, two lines of rails, one above the other, the lower for trains stopping every mile, the upper for Fxpresses. By No Meays.—A gentleman in Boston some time since, was reading from a paper that Mrs. Barrow was to have a benefiit at the Boston Theatre, on which occasion she would introduce her sister as Lady Gay Spanker. A little girl of the family, who did not exactly understand the remark, enquired if Lady Gay would spank her before all the folks! A Noster Act.—The conductor on an Eastern road, a short time since, saw a boy in in the water, and about to drown, notwithstanding the train was going at the rate of twenty-five miles an hour, he sprang from the car into the pond, and rescued the youth. Such an instance of presence of mind, coupled with daring courage and intrepidity is rare indeed. A Youne Morner.—The census taker found & woman in Mascedon, N. Y., 23 years old, mother of four children, the eldest of whom is 12 years; next 8; third 3; last 1 year. The eldest of course was born when the mother was 12 years old. the ground at its xq) to such an immense * . ’ man’s hand, as it seemed to be fastened -there; for neither the drenching storms, nor’ the wifiter’s snows, nor the fury of the mountain blasts had been able to displace it, while the laughing at our-surmises. But last winter brought with it a solution of the mystery.— On visiting the spot, after a long continued storm, the entire caiion was found leveled the tree; and when it is considered that less snow fell during the last winter than was ever before known, itis fair to conclude that some one, from mere curiosity, had fastened the hat in its position, when the top of the tree was in reach of the hand, from the surface of the snow. Russtan ENTERPRISE AND DETERMINATION, To show how great are the exertions of Russia in the present war, it is now said that they have, by the most incredible exertions, so far advanced with a Rail Road from Moscow to Perekop, that it will be completed and in full operation in the autumn. This will enable them to pour inro the’ Crimea soldiers and supplies without limis. The French are so well aware of this that they are fortifying Kameesch, and will render it the strongest fortress in Europe, and sooner or later they will probably retire to it. Perekop is about 800 miles south of Moscow, and stands at the junction of the Crimean Penensula with the main land. It is 100 miles north of Sebastapool. When the above Railroad is complete, Russia will have a continuous .tract of over 1200 miles in length, extending north and south through her dominions, from St. Petersburg, on the gulf of Finland, to the shore of the Black Sea. At no distant day, St. Petersburg and Constantinople will doubtless bs connected by Ratirvad. : SLAVERY IN THE SouTy.—A gentleman of great wealth, and who has enjoyed some of the highest honors in the gift of the Sfate, was, on Wednesday last, seen walking with his family, in the procession which followed to its last resting place, the body of a favored servant; upon further enquiry, we learn; ed that through all the weary hours of the night which terminated the existence of this slave, his gifted lady and himself were in attendance upon him, and soothing his last moments, gave directions for the sad offices becoming the occasion. ‘ A scene exbibiting a different phase of negro life, and which would indicate the enjoyment among themselves of considerable social advantages, might have . beén ‘witnessed the evening before the last.— Two colored persons, held in considerable estimation, were about to be married,“and_curious persons in the vicinity counted as. many as twenty-five carriages in attendance upon the ceremony.—Charleston Standard, wate: Important To THE LaprEs.—It is said that: in washing clothes the addition of thrée-quarters of an ounce of borax to a pound of soap, melted in without boiling, makes a saving of one-half in cost of soap. and three-fourths the labor of washing, .and improves the whiteness of the fabrics, besides the usual caustic effect is removed, and the hands are left with a peculiar soft and silky feeling, leaving nothing more to be desired by the most ambitious washerwoman. Can’t Reap AnD WriItTE.—Mr. De Bow, late Superintendent of the Census, says in his Review, “that in Alabama there are 33,757 native white citizens unable to read and write! Georgia has 41,200 of the same class! Kentucky 66,687; North Carolina, 73,566; 77,005! Two Hundred and Ninety-two Thousand Two Hundred and Fifteen native white inhabitants in five slave States who cannot read or write. ASTONISHING EFFrects oF THE DrouGHT.— After hearing it stated, says the New Orleans Crescent, that travelers on the river are seriously annoyed by the’clouds of dust kicked up by the steamboat wheels, we were in some degree prepared for a piece of news like the following, which we find in‘ the Lexington, (Mo.) Express : ‘ “The Captain of the Steamer Golden State arrived here some days ago from Council Bluffs, and Yellow Stone, informs us ‘that the. river up in that region was very low—the + gag whole Country suffering for want’ of rain— and that while the boat was at the mout of, the Yellow Stone, the prairie caught: fire, and before the fire could be put‘out, the river ’ In New Haven, Conn,, the Medical College ison the road to the Cemetery, the Divinity College on the road to the Poor House, and the Law School otf the road to the Jail. Mr. Brocha, of the house of Brocha, Buckman & Co., toils from twelve to sixteen hours per day. Brocha last year made $22,000,— What becameof it? Ten thousand dollars <c, “iv sple we maxwelis,””? while portion of the balance was expended on *‘ Blanche and Sarah,” so that they might go to New York and “show the Fantadlings” that there weré*other diamonds in New York besides. those which .Were inherited froma great Grandfather, who found in India’ a princely fortine and a diseased liver. Brocha hasbeen in business since 1840. He does a large and lucrative business. People who have never been in. his parlor and kitchen imagine that Broclia is worth a quarter of a million of dollars, while those*who have been in, wonder how he dodges the sheriff. Brocha is ‘Still toiling and still making money, and . yet, if he should die to-morrow, it is questionable whether his assetts would equal his liabilities. Brocha will:probably end his days by testing the.virtue of a shillings worth of strickhyne. Should we be one of the jurors *who sits upon his body, we should bring in the following verdict : “Died from the visitation of an extravagant wife and two senseless daughters.” SST SCE SR RCTS I ESTRAYS.
