140 Ghe Bling and Scientific Dress, “S$ne Has Iv Bap l’—At least a dozen different remarks, rich and ludicrous, were made by many of the Morinons and the Mormonesses while witnessing Mrs. Julia Dean Hayne in the eharacter of Caméle, the eveuing of her first appearance here. Unused to tbe simulations of the stage. and—with not a few—for the first time in a theater, the unlettered immigrants from the pauper preeints of the Old World, were no more endowed with thinking power than to absolutely believe that the said artiste’s coughing, as the “consumptive Camille,” was constitutionally and strictly real. Said one old Weleh woman within bearing, « Praise the Lord!” It’s too bad the President (meaning Brigham) would allow the dear, good lady to play tonight, with sueh a shoeking cough!” And, another, with an old fashioned hair-pin holding together a hoary head of hair resembling tow, foreed her way froin the rear, on to the stage, inquiriug of the property man to let her see ‘that poor sick lady,” that she might give her afew sups of herb deeoctiou whieh she held in a bottle, that she “Anew would ease the ereatuse’s throat.” “ What a pity the poor thing’s so short of breath,” said oue; and “Dear me but she’s got it bad!” said another consumption sympathiser !—Sal Lake t Vedetie. : Stutparr Works.—T. M. Boarman, Bsq., arrived a few days since from the mountains, eays the Red Blnff Independent, bringing apeeimens of sulphur aud brimstone from Lassen’s Butte, where, in conjunetion with other gentlemen of enterprise he has erected ma“chinery for the mannfacturingof snlphnr. The sipply is inexhaustible, and sufficient to fur nish the whole nation with brimstone. ' How ro Grr Rrp or Ants.—<A correspondent furnishes the San Jose Mercury the folJowing receipt: Buy two bits worth of tartar emetic ; mix it with sugar, either in powder or “dissolved in water, aud place it out of the reach of children, but where ants will be likely to find i; andiu less than three day’s they will all have left, your premises. A Fw weeks since, a returned soldier purchased a new pair of boots at a storein Buf falo, and left his old ones, but some time after returned and called for them, Wheu_ they were brought to him he ripped open the lining and took from beueath $1,550 in greenbacks, in denominations of $50, $500, and $1,000, which he had plaeed there and forgotten. Axour fifty thousand dollars’ worth of wornout fractional currency is destroyed each day, and its place is supplied with new. The entire amount in circulation is upward of $21,000,000. No more three eent notes are to be _issued—the aet of Congress prohibiting them “_and the five cest potes will also be withdrawn. Now Ready! Now Ready ! CATALOGUE Own it Hh PATER. Since that time, however, Mr. Hendy has made a further improvement by attaching a rubber hose botween the mouth-piece und the pipe, enabliug the blower to change his position withont disturbing the directiou or constant accuracy of the currenton the object npon which it is turned. In England, Franee and Ireland a feeling is rapidly growing in favor of abolishing imprisonment for debt. and another year, it is eonfidently asserted, will find laws in existence lorever doing away with this barbarisin, ‘The Lord Chaneellor of Jingland prepared and suhinitted to the last sessiun of Parliament a bill for the repeal of all laws for imprisonment for debt, and the Emperor of France bas reeommended the enactment of a similar meusure. ‘The proposed Act abolishes arrest for debt both on final judgment and mesne process, but while the person of the debtor will be free, the most stringent remedies are given to reaeh his property, no inatter where or how eireumstaneed. It provides that a discbarge sball Bot free the debtor’s future acquired property, unless his estate pays tive shillings in the pound, or unless bona jide creditors to the amount of three-fourths of his debts shull, by writing under their hands, consent to an absolute diseharge by which he shall be released. This sa short step, but it is in the right direction, and will be fullowed by others in eloser keeping with the progressive tendency of the times. The stocks, the whipping-post and imprisonment for debt, have given plaee to homestead and bankrupt laws tn the United States, and enlightened Europe blushes at the barbarous laws upon its statute books whieh republican America has pronounced unjust and oppressive. ‘I'be next popular movement in sania after the abolishment of imprisonment for debt, will be for the exeinption of household furniture and homesteads from execution. Before this measure may beeome a law in France and England, however, new and startling innovations upon the legal practiees of the Old World will be veutured in the United States—possibly, in many of the States, the abolition ofail laws for the collection of debts ordisarily oceurred. The world moves. Tue restriction of tweuty-five per cent, on cotton, west of the Mississippi, has just beeu removed. ‘Thus all eotton is free with the exceptiog of the internal revenue tax of two cents.
