ca :'The city of Messina, in Sicily, with a
population of 100,000, does not ‘coniain a single newspaper, but. it has several theatres.—
The people have for many generations been so
accustomed to tyranny that they now do not
veém conscious of the value of their newly ac
quired freedom. The prineipal streets are
without sidewalks, but are_payed_with flags
stones about two feet square, and are. very
ditty” The houses ate white, roofed with red
tiles, and cut up into many small rooms, those
-on.the ground story being eonverted into
poor, mean stores, with littlevariety of goods,
and that mostly of the coarsest English manu
facture. The mechanics do not seem to have
half learned their trade. The people cannot
read.~~"The wages received by young women . gi
for packing oranges—the principal trade of
the place—is eight or’ ten cents a day. in the
busy season, and as ‘beef averages fourteen
cents.a pound there is but little morality. —
Theft and assassinations abound. Schools
are unknown;all the beauty which nature has
lavished upon the place cannot make it a desirable residence after th first charm of novdity has passed awayeee ae
KIDNAPPING IN SILVER CrTY.—A corresrelates, thie following Case of a father reine
A man named Burk, yesterday, at one
o'clock P.M. took his tittle daughter, some
six years of age, and rode hastily for Placer.
ville, as I learn, to place her in charge of a
lady friend and Ba her to school. Mr. and
Mrs. Burk had not lived together for several
months, and as soon as the child was missing
parties endeayored to procure saddle horses
and give chase to the father, but: without
avail. A telegraphic dispatch was. sent. this
morning, and two parties on horseback left.
in haste, but.as he arrived at Genoa early . ,
last evening, they doubtless rode in vain.—
His déstination was Placerville, aad the .excitement is over.
