, paronpar MORNING, AUG. 234. Tnion Administration Stee For County Judge: Ae, C, NILES. , . For State Senator + — ‘a JOHN C, BIRDSEYE. For Assemblymen + JAMES COLLING, WM, H. SEARS.SETH. MARTIN, J. W, RULER, he For Supervisor : JOSEPH WORRELL, ; Easrenn News.—lIt is useless to disguise the fact any longer that McClellan,. after a ‘Jeading his grand army inte the swamps of the ,Chickahominy, and after a horrible slaughter fer seven successive days, strewing the fields with dead patriots and filliug acres of hospitals with the maimed and the sick, has been obliged .tu evacuate the peninsula aid abandon the undertaking of reducing Richmond frum that direction. A blunder, « most egtogivus blunder, of & succession of them, has been made somewhere, and it is not bard to discover who is at fault. "Phe confidence of the people has been kept up in the midst of j reverses in the most remarkable degree, Generals have been made by newspapers und _ public sentimeat has been so misied by the -. game power, that in a repubicat government a . 3° « ; aon’ t on tom + degins. it is impossible fur the mien at the head of affairs to oppuasy it however misdirected. The American people Have been led to béliwve a man wae speciatly designed by Providence to leid the armies of the nation to innumera. ble and glorious vietoriea. Every movewent ot the wun las been misrepresented and mag— ified. Quaker -gund at-Manangas kept the army of the Potomac for months in check -tll Richmond was fortified. Then, when the army ,was brought into service a detour ~ by Yorktown . and Fredricksburg ou the part of the rebel forces served to cause delay. and the patriot forces inty the swamps on ond. side of Richmond. Heerherculean labors were performed in # deadJy wtinesphere: for months, and when at last the fact beeume tvo apparent that Richmond could ‘not be taken iu that direction, aud a withitwwal was imperative, the breaking up -of camp resulted in a succetsion of bloody battlos that lust us both ground and meu. These are facts without disguise, and ‘which taken in connection with others that -could not escape the notice of military men, demonstrate that the commanding general for the army of the Potomac hns not yet ‘been found. Fremont did more in Misseuri ~in lesa than half the time and at comparativeJy less expense than McClellan has dene in Virginia, an? was diegraced. Yet it was an easy work to pull him down. He had not -been deified by the press, or at best was only one of the infer gods. But, the commanding officer of the army of the Petomac has been raised to sucha position asa general in the estimation of sume people, that public sentiment has become a yrim-visaged Moloch at which thousards of human lives must be sacrifived beture the object of adoration will be changed. Thus far time—ample time—has developed no marka of great yeaeralship in MeClellan. He hasdone nothing to compare with the skill of Gen. Banks in making his celebrated retreat+ down the Shenanduah. In putting an army into eficieucy Gen. MeClellan has done well; but it is one thing to drill suldiers and another’ tu use them on the field ot battle. — The dullest scullion can -pin-feather a govuse, but it takes a oovk tu putit successfully to the fire. : There is no louger any reasun te magnify and disort facts. The eouutry needs to come to a realizing sense of its situation. Affairs are ina bad way. ‘the nation needs a mili tary oun to head its armies, and to this conclusion. many will come before a pew year We speak our imapressipus plainly, but perhaps, ju advance of public opinion. It matters not. We are for preparing for the woret, and like Brownluw,we would sae ritice éverything tor the Americin Union, und itseemsa te us that the time to begin the sucrilice is papery vente 5 ca We learn thut "hs. A. A. Sargent will remain with his constituents about two months, and most of bis time will be spent in speaking in-various parte of the State,a tunity to examine inte the condition of Sacramento ¢ity, and beg leave to report. The city is recuperating greatly, and the levee ‘future disasters by floods, is rising with commendable despatch. The bighold stenches of Inet winter and spring have measurably . remarkably offended ‘except in passing where indeed in @ better condition than we expected to see it. ‘The main streets are fairly dry, and passable-in sp'te uf the worn out condition of the planks. Bat the beautiful gardens of yore are'in a woful fight. Except those trees, shrubs and plants that can live in the water, vegetation in every shape is mostly killed, Still sueh is the hopeful character of the population. and the deter» mination of the residents of Sacramento to live there that gardens are replanted, -aiid every step taken to wipe out the Hidences of the fleods. We desire to put on record, in this connection, one prediction. The levee now raising around Sacramento will not be thorough-. ly settled hard before the next rainy seasen commences,. and auch is its material that we feel sure that should a flood like that of last havec with that levee, It ought, We should say, to be piled outside, and well protected against the—first floods and until it hav bes come firm, But the people of Sacramente who pay for the wark and are more largely interested onght to know. best. MINERAL RESOURCES OF THE STATE.— We have of late been more than ever impressed with the mineral resources of the State, Californian # not alone rich in gold. She has minés of sliver. The mines of copper at Copperopolis Professor Whitney thinks the richestin the world. The veins of coat of Mount Diabolo are worth millions and as yet the col fields of the State are not developed, There ia near San Pablo a valuable store of bitumen that seems to be destined to produce all the kerosene required by the State for a thousand years, besides material for the manufacture of gas. The State is full of other minerals, whose names ate too numerous to mention in this article. California is a country of boundless resources. ——LYSANDER WALKER, p nominee of the Union Democracy, of Sacramento, lately said in aspeech, he was in favor of voting the last dollar and the last man to prosecute the war, and when these means were exhausted, he would go himself if necessary. That is, Mr. Walker means when everybody else has spent their mouey: and got killed, he would take up arms, and not till then. Patriotic Union man, Lysander Walker, and wants “to get to go” ¢ to the Assembly. one DEFENSE OF STANTON. —Forney's Press defends Stanton, Secretary of War, against the assaults made upon him in various quarters. The blunders attributed to Stanton fare doubtless to be attributed to another source, te For the past week matters in “Localituins” line have been quite brisk, but somehow or other it was mighty quiet yesterday as everybody seem to be minding their own business, consequently there was no chanee for a fight. Tne Board of Supervisors advertise for sealed proposals fur the construction of a wooden roof over the Court House. “Specifications to be seen at the Clerk's office. ‘Tu District Court will not be in session to-day as ‘the Hon. Tue Bulletin, alluding to the kindness shown the remaming survivors of the Gulden Gate calamity on beard the Orizuba says as tullows: A. A.
